The Price of Freedom
PFC Robert Duncan, U.S. Army

My name is Private First Class Robert Joseph Duncan. I am a M240 Bravo machine gunner with Alpha company 1-327th Infantry Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division (air assault). I am writing to address the attitude of some American people and how it so drastically changed since 9-11. It seems that so many of you have forgotten of the 3000-plus lives lost that day, and many families broken because of the event. I have not. Nor have any of my fellow soldiers. What we do, we do not in spite or for revenge but because you are threatened, because the freedoms you take for granted are placed in danger of being taken from you. It is the duty of my fellow soldiers and myself to defend those freedoms you so easily forget the cost of. Freedom is not free!
It is purchased with the blood and sacrifices, my blood and the blood of countless others before me and that will never change. War is not something I dream of, it is not something I desire, but if the freedoms of the American people are threatened in any way shape or form - foreign or domestic - I will find the threat and perform the duties I have been trained for. Day and night and in all weather, I will fight to protect your rights and the freedoms and if necessary, I will purchase them with my blood. I do this willingly and without hate, malice or regret. Strong words? You bet! It is a stand I take for what this country is established upon.
I read the preamble of our Constitution. Some may still not understand why we do this; and for those who do not - you probably never will. Remember that every time you go to the store to buy any type of item, or walk down the street and enjoy the fresh air, or go to a private school of your choice, or travel from county to county or state to state, or vote for a change or whatever you believe in, yes, even protest. You may talk less favorably about our president, military, or government, but remember that someone died to give you that freedom - someone's son or daughter, father or mother, grandfather and so on.
Yes, the price is so easily forgotten isn't it? Take the time my fellow Americans and reflect on the price of freedom. Do not forget the price of freedom and do not forget what freedom is. Because the United States military will continue to fight and die for it as long as it is threatened. I will fight for my God, my country and for you - the American people. I will do so till my lungs can no longer draw the breath necessary for me to struggle. But someone will take up my place and so again is payment made for the price of your freedom. - PFC Robert Duncan is from Hemet CA, and is stationed in the Middle East.
