On Monday morning, I raced into work, raced into Chicago, into the Loop, to the Lake Michigan shore, my first day shift by myself. I was severely warned about making sure the tower was opened by six AM and I thought about this as I entered the Eisenhower Expressway from 88. I was listening to a tape when it had occurred to me to check the traffic, just in case, even though it was about five-twenty and only the tip of rush hour.

I turned on AM and caught the last of a newscast.

" . . . live from Meigs Field." And they went on to traffic.

Live from Meigs. How can they be live from Meigs when I haven’t opened the airport yet?

That's pretty assinine, how does a control tower guy manage to find time to unlock the terminal, clean the washrooms and open up the tower? I'm surprised there's enough time in the day so that he can stroll down to the parking lot and write parking tickets and fly the fire department helicopter around.
