Anyone use Telex's ANR 850 in the ERJ? If so, would you recommend it? Is the ANR effective at killing most of the wind noise? Can you adjust the mic to kill the background noise? Thanx for your help!
 
I tried one out a little while back and was pretty dissapointed in the ANR. There was no audible difference in having the ANR on vs. having it off. Makes me wonder if it even exists. I guess there is a reason why all the other ANRs have batteries and loads of electronics. Other features of the headset were nice. They were comfortable, did a relatively (for a non-earcup style headset) good job of passive noise reduction, and the microphone seems to perform well.

If you want to be able to hear when you retire, get a full earcup ANR headset. If you want to be stylish and not mess up your hair, get a telex 850.
 
A bunch of us at XJT use the 750 with earplugs. It works very well.

The headset I want next is the Panther Electronics. It is just two molded ear pieces with the mic in one of them - meaning there is no boom mic. It works off of the sinus cavity. Pretty darn cool.
 
I've used a bunch of ANR headsets and I've arrived at this conclusion. Nothing beats a BOSE if you're flying the ERJ. They cost a little more, but they're worth it. You'll never have any ringing or discomfort in your ears after work. What you can do, is go to a neighbourhood BOSE store and apply for a credit card and you'll get a 12 or an 18 month interest free deal on any BOSE product. Get the headset and try it out. If you don't like it, take it back. It won't cost you anything. Does anyone concur? Darn it! It''s the best!!
 
My sister-in-law is a Bose designer. Her current project is a ANR headset for jet cockpits. It will be significantly smaller than the one they have now, but just as good. It will probably be out in the next year or two, so I know that it does not help now. But, it is something to look forward to:).
 
I bet that'll score yuou points with the other crewmember(s).

How on earth do you want to operate a jet with some of those big headsets. Although I have seen the occasional regional jet with a pilot wearing the green David Clarks on his head.

It's not a prop, I think a regular telex750 style headset will be fine, or am I out of place? Do all the planes use an intercom between the pilots all the time?

Yup, sure is. That is why most of us wearing the 750s use earplugs and it is super quiet then. I normally put them in/take them out around 10,000'. Below 250 knots the airplane is just as quiet as any other jet.
 
offcourse loudness is different for each set of ears.

But do you really have to use an intercom to talk in a modern jet? offcourse I've been in jets that were loud enough that I had to raise my voice to converse with the other pilot.

Im my opinion the ERJ isn't THAT loud......
 
Then sennhezier with the cups works just fine in passive and anr. Also is very lightweight so it doesnt clamp your head like the DCs. If you dont know what sennheizers look like, look at 90% of sportscasters that are broadcasting live from an event, and theyll be wearing these exact ones.

I do not know if you fly the E145 because your profile does not say so. Well, in fact mine does not either but I do.

I have heard that the noise level in the E145 exceeds OSHA levels, thus the need for hearing protection. Also, at my airline (ExpressJet) I would say at least half of the pilots use the company provided David Clarks. The other half use their own DCs, other types of over the ear headsets, Telex 750s with earplugs, or the Telex 5x5 with molded ear pieces. We ALWAYS use the intercom, unless you want to shout at the top of your lungs during cruise - no exageration!
