Ok i've seen a few threads on this website regarding the Telex 850 ANRs.

On some threads the pilot has indicated that the 850's ANR features only work when the yoke switch is in the hot-mic position.

On other threads the pilot has indicated that the "jack" is always hot and therefore the ANR works just fine regardless of which position the yoke switch is in.

Has anyone actually flown in a CRJ with the Telex 850s who can tell me which?

I have been using Sennheiser HMEC45s with only limited success. They occasionally have a bit of feedback (from the windshield heat?) and I still wear earplugs with them.

Thanks in advance!

I've been flying the RJ with the 850's and the ANR is always active. I've tried the Sennheisers and believe me, you will like the 850's much more.

i don't know if this helps or not, but i recently flew a trip with a capt that is a telex dealer from his fbo (his other job), and he was wearing the 850's. i asked him that exact same question, and contrary to what i have seen on this board, he said the ANR always worked, regardless of hot mic position...i didn't get to try the headset out myself, unfortunately.

MarvGolden's got them for $419.

Has anyone at Comair tried them on their CRJs?

Has anyone tried both the 850s and the Sennheiser HMEC45's? Is it a little better as far as feedback from the windshield heat and wind noise?

Or should I bite the bullet and get the Bose X?

Thanks again

I know I already posted to another area about the Airman 850, but I'll tell you what I know and like about mine. Active noise reduction works on mine in the CRJ regardless of hot mic switch position. I seriously doubt that Comair and ASA's aircraft are configured very differently (I fly for ASA). The noise attenuation is superb. The leather ear seals are much more comfortable than the Airman 750's foam ones. It doesn't weigh much more than an Airman 750. I cannot even imagine having to worry about a battery for my headset. I think you'll like the Airman 850 a lot.

I asked Telex about the hot mic issue with the 850 in the CRJ and I got a very definite "I don't know" from them. Thanks to everyone for all of the input on the CRJ.

My Bose X headsets are falling apart. Bose told me that they were not meant for the amount of wear and tear that an airline pilot would put them through. I was a little shocked at that seeing as I paid top dollar for them. Apparently, they were intended for weekend warriors. I am very satisfied with the Bose and they worked great in the Barons and Navajos, but it's time to hang them up for something more suited for the job that I have now.

I wonder if someone in the avionics shop at the trailers would know. I'll stop in next time I go to work and ask them.

I would assume that if the jack is powered full time it would work, but if the intercom switch depowers the mic jack perhaps it wouldnt.

What did you settle on? I was looking at the Bose X and found them to be very impressive -- but not if they're going to fall apart tomorrow.

FurloughedAgain,

I haven't made any decisions yet so I'm still using my Bose. I'm leaning toward the 850's, if they work with the hot mic off. I tried them on in the Flight Station in CVG and they were very comfortable with the leather earseals.

If you go with the Bose, they won't fall apart tomorrow. I've had mine for four years now. The rubber casing on the mic boom is chafing in some spots and the wires are exposed, the pad on the headband is falling off, the coating on the earseals is flaking off leaving little black specks on my face and shirt, the volume knob has fallen off the battery box. I've sent them back twice already. Once when the noice cancelling in one earcup failed and the other time was when the pin that the right earcup swivels in snapped. Bose was great about fixing the problems and had them back to me within four days. But now my warantee has expired so I'm wondering if it worth it to have them repaired so they can be worn down again.

To anyone who has used the 850's in the CRJ who says that the noise cancelling always works, have you verified that all five hot mic switches (2 on the yokes and 3 on the audio panels) are off when you are using them? Just curious.

I took the 850's out for a test drive on my last trip and they worked great in the CRJ. Noise cancelling worked with the hot mics off - and, yes, I verified that all 5 hot mic switches were selected off. I let my FO try them for a leg and he's about to hang up his 750's w/earplugs and get the 850's. IMO, their worth it!

I tried the 850 in the CRJ, lots of wind noise at high speeds, I sent them back after 2 weeks. I bought the HMEC25 there great, but the battery thing again.
I guess I'll buy batterys for a while.
