Hello,
I know that mostly pilots are on this board, but this question is aimed towards flight attendants in the know that may be lurking! I am interested in beginning a career as a flight attendant. I am a 22 years old and in great physical and moral shape (everything an airline looks for, right?) but, I have one question... I have some tattoos and body piercings, is this automatically disqualifying for employment.? What are your thoughts, feelings, and/or company policy on females with body art. Do you or any of your female flight attendant colleagues have tattoos or piercings? if so, how well does the average uniform cover them? I havn't flown recently so can't remember what current uniforms look like, or shall i say how much they cover up! Thanks in advance from an aspiring flight attendant!!!

Hannah,

The fact that you have body art will be seen as cool to some people, and wierd others out. It will make for interesting conversations with your crew should you pursue becoming a flight attendant! :)

I can tell you however, that at work, all visible tattoos will have to be covered, either by clothing or by bandages. I don't know of an airline that DOESN'T have this policy. Same goes for extra piercings. Depending on the degree to which you're tattood this could pose a problem. Example: if you have even a half sleeve, you'd have to wear long sleeved shirts even in the summer, which could end up being really hot. Tattoos behind your ears are harder to conceal, and hair usually has to be pulled back. (Stage makeup might work though)

I hope this has helped you some. You'll also get alot of help at http://flightattendants.org

Take care!

Pretty easy, just think consevative when dressing for the interview. Remove the piercings and cover any tatoos that arent covered by regular interview/bizz type cloths. Remember Conservitave and responsibile (or however they spell it).

Good Luck

You should be able to hide them during the interview, unless they are on your hands or face. As for the piercings, take them out for the interview if they are visible (ears excepted).

If you are hired, you will have to conform to the airlines dress code. They have pretty strict regulations on such things (at ASA we have a whole section of our manual dedicated to such stuff).

BTW, are you on suicidegirls.com? If so, we need more FA's like you.

I have a tatto on my forearm and have never covered it up nor have I been asked to by the company I work for, I also have a friend at another airline with the a tat in the same place and I don't believe he has been asked to cover it up.

I deffernce to other posters noone in the hiring loop saw my tatto until AFTER i was 3/4ths thru gound school so, if you can hide it I would do so until after your hired.

That will change - at least the moral part anyway. ;-)

No

I like them but the company doesn't. My co. wants them covered. If you have a pierced tongue you need to not wear it on duty.

Do you or any of your female flight attendant colleagues have tattoos or piercings?

I've flown with lots that have tats and piercings. We have on FA who frequently shows her piercing to crews. Yeah, it's "down there".

if so, how well does the average uniform cover them?

It depends on where it is, and how your uniform is tailored. ;-) Many FAs use makeup or some use those big baindaids even.

Do you know where you are applying yet? We are looking for FAs at my co.

Thanks for all the advice. Yeah, I figured that if it was covered up, then it would be fine for the interview. I had heard some stories of applications that make you check "yes or no" for tattoos and for one girl that said no, she got fired a week or so into training because the teacher saw an "undeclared" tattoo. That sucks. other than my tounge ring that will be removed, I should beable to hide everything. Do any airlines prohibit dark colored hose for wear with uniform dresses? cause that will cover the one on my leg very well!

most that i know of allow dark hose.

we're allowed black and navy both.

and there's always the pants option.

Airlines = superconsertive. Most will require all tats to be undercover, whether under the uniform or under bandages (I've seen this more and more recently). I have a FA roomate with some ink (and both me and my other roomate who are both airline pilots have some ink also) and none of us have had any problems even on applications, but all of our ink is covered by our regular uniforms.

I have three and two are on my forearms. I never wear a long sleeve shirt and nobody in an official capacity has ever mentioned it.

At my company, visible tattoos are okay for the pilots but not for the FAs. I guess passengers like the tough guy/girl image up front but don't want some outlaw biker serving them drinks in the back.

Jobear,

How's Rufus doing? I heard about the AIDS scare. You guys still together?

Circle K :p

He's okay but he told me to tell you that "The test was Positive and the Doctor said to use HerpicinL if it flares up" Rufus also told me to say you'd know where to Smear it?
Whatever that means:p

Take care tell D,F,S we said hi
