I had to talk two of my students out of Gulfstream Academy this week. Gulfstream actually sent recruiters out to my flight school where i work and were i went through training and tried to recruit students. They did this a few months ago and no one thought much about it then. However now some of the students are telling us "instructors" They might be going to GAA. I am against PFT and would hate to see my students go that route. The good news is they changed their minds after they realized it would be a mistake that they might be looked down apon in the long run.

Point of the story is we talked 2 out of making the 30000 dollar job offer making 8 bucks an hour.

I just posted pay for training? above and then found your comments. What do you mean with your last statement:

It just doen't seem right that someone should be cursed for not wanting to go through the CFI format even though that's what EVERYONE does.

If you research into GAA you will see that you pretty much are paying for an "airline" to hire you and train you so they can turn around and pay you almost minimum wage to sit right seat. I am not saying i am an expert on GAA because I for one wouldnt go there and will never. Its expensive enough to get through all your ratings and then to turn around and pay thousands more to get paid 8 bucks an hour. Instructing isnt that bad and it will get me where i want to go and I will have a good conscience. If you go there for a year and you are guranteed what 250 hours, that leaves you in the hole 30000 and you are sitting at under 500tt. That total time wont get you far and you have a fat bill. Plus by the time you get done with your 6 months or 1 year what ever it is who knows the mins might go up. Just my two cents and what i explained to my students.

I by no means want it to sound like GAA pilots are bad pilots I just think its a bad route to take. I am instructing and it can be fun but your right its not a long term career choice. At least not for me. Good luck in your decisions.

PFT Sucks

It just doen't seem right that someone should be cursed for not wanting to go through the CFI format even though that's what EVERYONE does.

This is not an example of "being your own person and walking your own path". You PFT, you suck. You are bringing down the whole industry for the rest of us. And what you don't realize is that it will come back to bite you in the a$$. So you PFT and get an $8/hr right seat job.Congratulations. I make $16/hr as a cfi and have a hard time paying my rent, good luck with a loan on top. There is nothing more that I want other than find a job not teaching stalls, but in the mean time I will not sell my self short and damage my fellow pilots' careers, because it will hurt me in the long run. Bottom line, you pft everyone loses except for "the man". Look at the big picture. If we would hold our selves to a higher standard we would have a much better QOL, as opposed to always complaining about it. Why do we fight each other as opposed to having the man fight for us? What most of us don't realize is that it starts from the very bottom. Just a couple of thoughts that ran through my mind tonight.

Dont do it!! Thats the message. If you do it you will be a PFT for life and if you work for it as a CFI or cargo or anything else once you do make it where you want you will have EARNED it just like you did through out earning your licenses. Dont sell out. Oh and the caravan right seat program is the stupidest thing i have ever seen.

Just think of it this way. Most of those people whom are going to interview you are people who worked as CFIs and charter and whatever they had to did what ever they had to do to build their time. Do you think they are going to like that you did nothing of the sort. I wouldnt. Someone stuck it out and taught you so give back and teach others it will only make you better.

any way thats most of the points i went over with my students i hope it changes your mind. The people at GAA are going to tell you whatever they can to get the free labor and 30 grand out of you.

Well that 8 dollars is just bogus. The way i look at it its not paying to be employed. Its just like renting out a multi engine but cheaper. Thats all. But everyone has his or her opinion. People fixate on that "8" bucks and when your not really employed again your just renting out a seminole on juice. my 4 cents.

Very nice statement there, Superpilot. Especially the last part.

mcjohn, if you don't have a problem looking in a mirror and seeing a whore, by all means, write the check. But that's how the majority of the pilot population will view you.

But hey, at least you won't have to waste your time flight instructing.

Why are we so bent up on calling it PFT? Call it like it is... Paying for your flight time. Nothing more, nothing less. I sincerely believe that if you have $30k to go "have some fun" with, go have some fun. But if you're "investing" that $30k in the hopes of getting a great job, well, you can get that same job for $30k less *AND* make some money while you're waiting by instructing. Come to think of it, you're building 250 hours of SIC time at the rate of $112/hr (gotta take away that $8/hr, which is taxed anyway). If you took $30k you could get a *nice* discount on some block time on a piston twin and log PIC in a multi. *That* number is what gets people hired at regionals, not SIC time. Then you can find a buddy or some other sucker to pay you to log SIC time in a multi.

With 30k i could get 210 hours in a duchess or 160 hours in a Cessna 310.

Of course, first i'll have to get 30k ;)

Who does Gulfstream fly for anyway? What do they fly? And how the f%^K do they get away with it? I don't have the stomich to go to their website.

This alone is pretty amazing. What do you suppose they would do if you sent a recruiter to their facility to try to get some students for your school?
