I am going into upt this summer and wanted to get a head start reading up on the T-37. Does anyone know where I can get any manuals or if anyone has any laying around they don't need. Thanks for the help

Check on www.baseops.net. It is a forum just like this but for people wanted to go into military aviation. It has all kinds of information for people going to UPT. Also i'm sure you already know this but make sure you are getting the T-37 and not the T-6. Just would cause all kinds of problems learning the 37 only to find out you will be flying the T-6. Good luck.

Yep, P–Mac is correct. Enjoy your free-time. You won't have much for the next year or more. Guys that spent up to a year studying tweet systems and BOLDFACE had an advantage for all of about one day.

You're wasting your time trying to learn things that they're going to teach you anyway.

Besides, you look like a kook when you go to your first day of UPT and brag that you've been studying things you don't understand for months and months.

Go fly a kite instead!

Exactly, enjoy your life. m sure youre pretty excited to go to UPT, but you will learn it quickly enough while youre there. They pretty much spoon feed you in tweets anyway.

After you find out what airplane (T-37 or T-6) and you're OTS complete, it definitely wouldn't hurt to grab the OPS LIMITS/BOLDFACE Sheet for the appropriate plane and start memorizing stuff. Like others have said, don't stress yourself out ahead of time.

SUPT is kind of like a marathon with brief periods of full out sprinting mixed in.

No marathon I've ever run finished at a bar every night! Oh wait... that was Navy primary in Pensacola... I hear you AF types arn't allowed to have fun as per the dash one!
...maybe that was part of the full out sprinting I was talking about! I will agree that Pensacola was a blast...so was the roadtrip from Columbus to Mardi Gras:)

I think one of the keys to success is knowing how to let off some steam from time to time, but if I had gone to Willie, there's no way I would have earned my wings (too many distractions)!

Just remember this:

HANDGRIPS - RAISE
TRIGGERS - SQUEZZE

This works every time!
I remember TRIGGER(S) - SQUEEZE

which was pronounced "Trigger, triggers - Squeeze"

(Of course, it wouldn't be the only thing that's changed since then.)

And about "every time" - - I seem to recall there was an envelope. So, that would lead to whole 'nuther area of questions, like, how low with wings level, how low in the final turn, etc., etc., etc. OK, now I'm starting to dredge up less pleasant memories. :)

THROTTLES - IDLE
RUDDER AND AILERONS - NEUTRAL
and so on...

and so on...

I think if I had to go through it again, and I had time to prepare, I'd work on some of the rote memory stuff, like the boldface, and the systems acronyms (AC components, DC components, AC/DC components), and the dual only and prohibited maneuvers, etc. You don't really need to understand much to commit those to memory, and yet I seem to recall it was pretty important to have those lists memorized.

It's no longer a boldface...but the old Spin Boldface back in 1993 (Tweet ACE) was 43 words, 20 before the () 3 words inside, and 20 after the ()...Here goes...

THROTTLES - IDLE
RUDDER AND AILERONS - NEUTRAL
STICK - ABRUPTLY FULL AFT AND HOLD
RUDDER - ABRUPTLY APPLY FULL RUDDER OPPOSITE TURN DIRECTION (OPPOSITE TURN NEEDLE) AND HOLD
STICK - ABRUPTLY FULL FORWARD ONE TURN AFTER APPLYING RUDDER
CONTROLS - NEUTRAL AFTER SPINNING STOPS AND RECOVER FROM DIVE

They eliminated this as boldface sometime between 1996 and 1997 (can't exactly remember when)...Made sense to know HOW to do it, but NOBODY I know could actually do a spin recovery and recite the actual boldface at the same time. Yes, spins were still HEAVILY emphasized back then. Not sure about the T-6...anyone??

Yeah, I knew that. :) I just didn't wanna type that much!

I've watched a lot of spin recovery attempts, and I can tell you THE MOST COMMON cause of unsuccessful recovery was rushing the recovery. When I heard "IDLE, NEUTRAL, AFT" I cringed. On a few occassions I heard "you have the airplane" and responded "No, YOU have the airplane, now use the BOLDFACE." I NEVER did the boldface that it didn't work.

Just my experience ... I never was a fan of the ATC mentality, anyway. (I know, I know, it's not ATC anymore either. :()

I agree with above posters on preparing for UPT. Know the Boldface/Ops limits before you get here, thats it.... and enjoy your time. Don't get too far ahead in your studying. In academics, just concentrate on your current subject and cross other bridges when you get to them.

Good luck.

If you go to Columbus, know the difference between Taxiway Alpha and Sunfish (Rwy 13R)...One former student forgot that on his ride before solo...Yikes!

Seriously, if you do screw something up, learn from it! Those who say they never make mistakes when they're flying are lying! IPs make mistakes too. Hang out with the ones who teach you how to fix mistakes.

Does anyone know what the current boldface is. I tried to download it off of Baseops.net but it didn't work. Thanks for all the help.

Even knowing the boldface is over preparation dude...they assume you know nothing when you get there so enjoy life and meet their expectations. I know guys who spent hours and hours in the cockpit procedures trainer while we were in academics and they were ahead for maybe 2 hours once we hit the flightline.

And contrary to popular belief you WILL have free time in pilot training, if you go T-1's you will have a ton of it, unless you are one of the aforementioned dorks spending hours in the procedures trainer that is.
