Don't know chit about it, saw it posted on a job site.

SWORDFISH SPOTTER PILOT WANTED... Pilot with high-wing airplane [ie.150,152] needed to spot swordfish around Avalon, Catalina Island, California during May thru October, mostly weekends with some midweek flying depending on weather. Pilot will receive 35% of the catch, Pilot also takes care of all fuel and aircraft costs. Helps if Pilot likes fishing and flying over water, will train Pilot to find and spot Swordfish if necessary. If interested contact Gary Konigsmark at CA/(310) 510-2611

I know a guy who used to do this spotting tuna. He'd get well over 100 mile out. The 150 was made specifically for this. They took off well over gross weight (due to the whole plane being turned into a fuel tank). The pilot would pump by hand the fuel from the tank on his side and baggage area to the wing tanks while flying just over the water.

Avalon is only a few miles away from Long Beach. It wouldn't be 100 miles off-shore, more like 30. And there's an airport on Catalina, as well, if you had problems out there. So you'd really be around 15 miles from an airport, at most.

Isn't Swordfish a high dollar item in resturants?

No, but they are a few hundred pounds each, so you would make money in volume. Atlantic bluefin, now there is a good fish. They go for top dollar in the Japanese fish markets ($40-$60 a pound).
