As much as I'd appreciate a gift of "pilot supplies" I'd probably prefer to pick out my own.

Sporty's Pilot Shop and Sporty's Wright Brothers Collection are great places to pick up gadgets and "stuff" that lots of pilots like, but so much of it depends on personal preference and taste. Maybe you can get him to surf those sites and see what strikes his fancy.

You can't go wrong giving him something out of this "COLLECTION" ;)

A headset is probably the best thing to get someone that is starting training. That way they don't have to use some cheap, crappy loaner headset that has been sneezed on by three strangers a day for the last 13 years. Like Tony said though, it would be good if he knew beforehand what type of headset you are getting. Its best not to skimp on a headset too...if you get a poor quality one, it will be uncomfortable and he'll want a good one soon. You can get a nice David Clark or LightSpeed headset on Ebay for $200 and up.

Find out what books his school uses. See if you can find that set on Ebay. A lot of schools use kits put out by Jeppesen, etc., that you can also find on Ebay probably 30% cheaper than anywhere else.
