I'm in the market for a new pair of sunglasses. $100 Oakleys and Ray-Bans and Serengetis are out of my price range - I can stretch to about $50. I was leaning towards some $15 drug store sunglasses, but I want my eyes to continue to work for a lot more years. The only ones I've found in that price range are the American Optical Aviators and the Randolph Aviators. Anybody have any luck (good or bad) with these? Any other suggestions?

sunglasses

go to

apairofshades.com they have the best selection and prices.

my personal opinion is don't buy oakley.

Just my $0.02...

Rayban's are nice, but I need the large metal 3's (or whatever their called now). That makes the lense big enough that it rests more on my cheek than the bridge of my nose.

Randolph's are nice, but to me their too heavy and become uncomfortable after a while, especially with headsets.

I bought a pair of Wal Mart specials ($12.99) that are both light weight and comfortable AND, AND, AND have a good UV protection. For driving I have Oakley knock-off's to block light coming in from the sides.

I've found I'm more likely to wear sunglasses in the Citation due to the expanse of windows. The Falcon has a full forward sunscreen that slides up from atop the glareshield, plus great side-screens. The sun has to be directly in the window to require sunglasses.

If you do some homework, you'll find that some inexpensive pairs provide as much UV protection as expensive glasses.

Prada and Arnette are two of my favorites. I wear the Arnette's for flying and Prada for goin out since they are more for "style" than anything else...

Oakley are very nice and extremely comfortable.. They are also engineered extremely well and pretty much are among the best of the best. (only problem is they scratch very easily) - small downside though to a very sharp pair of glasses.

there was another thread on sunglasses...after reading over raved reviews of serengheti's i tried em on with my headset and didnt feel comfy. After searching i got silhouette's. Bendy temples, very comfy, nonpolarized, and a tint gradient for easy instrument viewing. SUper lightweight. (they were a little more pricey but well worth it) go with what is comfortable with good UV protection.

hahaha. Actually with those blu blockers I was able to get some real good cloud definition on those real hazy days when I used to have to work the VFR cloud clearances to the max to get skydivers up. I don't wear em anymore...but I had no complaints with em.

I do the raybans now. The only pair of shades I ever had for three years.

I do the raybans thing now. The only pair of shades I ever had that lasted for three years.

$12 Dockers sunglasses from Bergner's (or Carson's for those without Bergner's). They were originally $25 but that stuff is always on sale! Good UV, non-polarized, and what I really like about them is that they don't stick out behind my ears much at all so they have minimal interference with my headset.

I think oakleys are overrated. A lot of guys who wear them look like overworked detroit wife-beating cops. But hey, they look cool, right?

I wear the 14.99 "lenses for driving" sunglasses at walmart. They have 100% UV protection and have very thin frames near the temple and around the ears. Nothing hurts like a sunglass arm being pressed against your head by a headset.

DO NOT GET POLARIZED GLASSES!!

hahaha...oakleys are so 80's. A goldwing skydiver I know wears em and they look good with his Trans Am and Mullet hairstyle.

Check out this page. Campmor.com

You might find a great deal on a pair of Serengetis that you thought were out of the price range. Or any other brand. I prefer Serengetis with the drivers lens that has gradient.

Hope this helps...

Why is polarized bad?

Polarized is all you need if you are fishing or skiing. However, it shows something in the glass on aircraft windshields. It makes sort of a waffle pattern in the King Air. It is really annoying. I think I read something about it being against regs too, but I've never seen the FAR.

When I was in the USAF, we were told not to wear polarized glasses because the canopys of our airplanes were also polarized.

The result would be blind spots due to polarization mismatch.

You can't read EFIS displays with polarized glasses.

This is probably one of the most beneficial things I have ever learned on this board. I loved my Maui Jim's but had a hard time reading any EFIS that wasn't right in front of me. About a year ago there was another discussion on sunglasses and I was again praising the Maui's and somebody said, hey dumba$$ you realize Maui's are polarized and you can't read EFIS with polarized sunglasses. No Shiite! You really can't. So I switched back to Serengeti’s until recently when I had to finally get some prescription glass  Ray Bans:)

I like Native sunglasses they come with a lifetime guarantee, if they break in any way, shape or form, you get them replaced for $20.00, and they normally run about $70.00. Try it out, they are unfortunately polarized though, but comfortable with headsets.

I tried on a pair of the Eagle Eyes (yes the ones on tv) and love them.

One problem though they are polarized. I have only flown GA aircraft and only one cockpit gave me problems, and that was a brand new Cirrus R22. So I went down to WalMart and bought a $9 pair of sunglasses that were not polarized. They work great for me. I use the Eagle Eyes for driving only now.

Very informative article about aviators and sunglasses. Makes for a good read.
