This may be a dumb question, but I figured it's worth a shot to ask.

I'm going to have a few weeks off from college this summer and am interested in gaining more aviation experience. Unfortunately, I'm poor and can't really afford to pay for it. I'm wondering if there is anyway to get some kind of psuedo-internship with any flying operations. I'm not looking for anything real formal or anything that's going to really get me a job or whatever, just simply for a way to gain some experince (and I don't care about logging any flight time or sim time or whatever either). I'm game for anything from riding along in a Cessna to working with a cargo operation to working with an A&P fixing airplanes. I figure there are probably some major legal and liability issues with a lot of these options, but I thought I ask around just to see if anyone had some ideas. This is all purely just to build my personal aviation experience to make me a better pilot. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

the airlines

Why not try to get a ground position with a regional airline?

The money is not bad, and you can see an insider point of view of the entire operation of an airline.

You get pass benefits from day one (with most carriers), and some offer preference for pilot hiring for internals.

Just something to think about.

Internship

As a former CAP member, I like your T-41 reference in your profile! :) Our CAP wing had an ex-Army T-41B that I loved to fly. Granted, it wasn't much more than a glorified 172, but it was the closest thing I flew to a warbird.

Along with the excellent suggestions above, can your school placement department turn you on to some things? I'd go ask there.

I gather that you are not an Aeronautical Science major. However, if you are, your college should have a bunch of internships.

Maybe you can do something with your local airport authority. Try your city airport director and maybe he/she will have something or can steer you in the right direction.

Hope that helps a little more. Good luck with your efforts.
