Alright Buckeroos!!!!
For those of you who are student pilots or flight instructors, you probably fit into the category of "I'm educated and I fly planes but my annual income is less than poverty level."
I feel your pain. Honestly.
So here are a few ideas to help you save some pennies here and there, what works for one may not work for another but this is all personal experience stuff so keep that in mind no matter how crazy some of it might sound, it'll pay off.
First priority is to keep the bill collectors off your back so let's take a look at the bills you probably have and a suggestion to keep them down.
1) Student loan....Get a job or a second job for the sole purpose of making the payment.
2) Credit card....Don't skip the payment, pay more than the minimum or it won't go away, I guarantee it. A lot of credit card companies offer 0% interest for 6-12 month periods, if you apply for these and get one, pay what you can on the old one if not all of it and do your best to not use it anymore. Cancel it!
3) Electricity, water, gas, etc....ROOMATES ROOMATES ROOMATES and lots of them. Are you too good the shack up with two others in a one or two bedroom apartment that are in your situation? Probably not, besides, if you've got two jobs you'll never be in their way anyhow. Don't take those 20 minute showers, turn the heat or air conditioner off when nobody is home, as well as all the lights, computer, television, etc.
4) Cable TV, internet, cell phone....
As far as the TV goes, go without, you don't NEED it!
Internet access is available at the public library or if you get a phone line without long distance and all the bells and whistles it shouldn't run each occupant more than 8 or 9 bucks a month, maybe less.
Cell phone....Shop around for the best plan that suits your NEEDS. Avoid going over your minute plan, it's hard but can be done.
5) Food....
Don't go shopping when you're hungry, a loaf of bread, 6 cans of tuna, and some fruits and veggies will go a long way. Also there are foods that are cheap, somewhat healthy, and will last a long time. Pick up a bag of red beans and a bag of rice, you'll eat all week for about 3 bones, there are some good recipes for that one as well if you like Cajun/Creole. Find what works best for you.
6) Rent....
Split 2 or 3 ways this shouldn't hurt too much. Do you NEED to live in the nicest place in town or can you suck it up for a year or two and go with the "just below average" type of shack?
I understand there are a lot of different variables as you're all in different situations but these are just some ideas that if you follow WILL stretch out your greenbacks. Won't always be fun but you might be able to afford that new CD or take a date to a movie once in a while, just don't take her back to your place.
