How many here have experience using Stewart in lieu of say KEWR? I'm especially interested in operations involving helicopter charters from SWK to downtown Manhattan. I have heard that some FBO's will allow the helicopter plane side and others will not? Finally just how bad does the weather have to get before the helicopter option starts looking shakey, no pun intended.

Finally, being a Marriott whore, is ther a good one near by?

Thanks

It has been a few years since I have operated out of SWF so my information could be out of date.

Unless they have added a new ILS there is only one to the east, to the west is a VOR. There is new, well new as of 8 years ago :p , FBO next to the Army Ramp and I do believe that they allow ramp side helicopter service.

Now as far as Marriotts go there was not one there, that of course may changed as well. The only time we ever spent the night was because we broke down, which happened a lot. The best hotel was a Holiday Inn.

On the plus side there is not much traffic and the runway is nice and long. There is not a lot to do in Newburge except tour West Point, which one should do if given the chance.

Hopefully someone here will have more current information.

There are ILS's to both sides, GPS's to the others. A courtyard Marriott opened up about 2 1/2 years ago about 3/4 East of the airport, about a 10 minute drive. If you are there for a night or two it's allright, just make sure you have something to do during the day.

Orange County Choppers is just down the road. Other than that, it's a wasteland. I'd stick to EWR--however much it sucks. TC

P.S.--We're moving from EWR to HPN but we're flying little airplanes. ;)

GE and AmEx operate from SWF. AIN had an article saying there will be a major hangar complex to be built by some development company, intended for corporate hangar space. Flight to HPN is about 10 minutes.

ILS's to both 27 and 9.

Besides the Courtyard there's a brand new Hilton Garden inn there too.

I figured things had changed from when I was last there. Gald to see the ILS to the west, I sure could have used it a few times 10+ years ago.

Another article I read in the local paper talked about developing Stewart as a reliever for the big boys ie JFK, LGA, EWR, TEB, etc. Sounds crappy but so is flying out of those places. They also talked about developing Belmar and Toms' river, this mostly for the business jet traffic. I don't know if you would ever get airline type into those places, but the only way to relieve the congestion is more runway.

I like SWF. Its big and uncrowded.

However, its simply just a little too far for NYC. Limited city access....one must go down the thruway and into jersey before hitting the GWB. It can be a real nightmare.

I think a few helo operators tried shuttles and they failed.

end of the day....EWR, TEB and HPN are where its at.

I guess its simply real estate -- location, location, location.

Niccceee long runway with all the lights and the FBO (used to be called rifton) is never crowded. I flew freight there for a while and never waited for a departure release.

Actually there are a couple of helo charter operations going to Manhattan out of there. $5,000 one-way in the 6 place S76 and $3,000 for the Twin Star which is 3 place and not IFR approved.
