Larger aircraft with a tiller wheel or whatever, upon touchdown, when does the pilot begin to steer the aircraft with it. Correct me if tiller is not the right term. Thanks.

so you can still use the rudder pedals for sterring? sorry...I only know about flying cessnas. thanks a lot!

In the J41 the rudder pedal control only the rudder. The tiller is connected mechanically (with some hydraulic boost) to the nose wheel steering. On takeoff the CA has to steer with the tiller until 70 KIAS (rudder becomes effective for "aerodynamic" steering at about 70 KIAS) then the flying pilot takes over and steers with the pedals for the remainder of the takeoff roll. The reverse is true on landing.

In the 328Jet the rudder pedals give about 10 degrees nose wheel deflection either side of center and the tiller will give 70 degrees either side. The this means that the flying pilot has control of the takeoff roll from the very beginning no matter which seat he's sitting in. The tiller is not activated for takeoff and is not activated on the landing roll until we slow to 50 KIAS to prevent over controlling. I generally use the tiller in the 328 only for very tight turns since the rudder pedals are enough for most turns. Not sure what techniques the other guys use.

Hope that helps.
