Spirit Airlines Moves up Airbus Deliveries for the Peak Winter Season
Monday May 17, 9:01 am ET
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2004--Spirit Airlines has moved up its plans to introduce Airbus aircraft to join its existing MD-80 fleet. Effective November 18, 2004, Spirit will add four A321 aircraft into its fleet just in time to operate during the peak holiday and winter season. The A321 is configured with 198 seats with 16 Spirit Plus seats in its forward cabin and 182 seats in coach.
Spirit Airlines recently announced orders for 35 new aircraft with Airbus Industrie with options to buy 50 more. Spirit will take 15 aircraft directly from Airbus and 20 from ILFC (International Lease Finance Corporation). These aircraft are planned to enter the fleet beginning in the spring of 2005.
"We are delighted to introduce our customers to the Airbus aircraft sooner than originally planned," said Jacob Schorr, president and CEO of Spirit Airlines. "This fall, customers will experience a roomier cabin, more comfortable seats, and more room for carry-on baggage. Spirit will experience a significant savings in fuel and maintenance costs that will continue to be passed on to our customers in the form of low ticket prices."
"From Atlantic City, Spirit will utilize these new aircraft on flights to Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers. These popular markets are ideal for introducing the A321. In addition to their roominess and comfort, the additional seats of the A321 will allow more customers to take advantage of Spirit's low fares and friendly, efficient service in time for the holidays. We will be able to bring more people to these key non-stop destinations as well as offer more customers connecting service opportunities into San Juan and Cancun," continued Schorr.
Spirit recently began its system wide roll-out of Spirit Self Check-in, and is currently available in Detroit and Fort Lauderdale. These electronic kiosks are designed to make the airport check-in process fast and easy. Spirit also offers customers who book on spiritair.com the ability to choose their seats and print out round-trip boarding passes so they may skip the ticket counter and go directly to the gate.
