"Southwest Remains Top U.S. Carrier
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Southwest carried more passengers than any other U.S. airline for the second month in a row in September 2006. Southwest carried 7.5 million passengers during the month, ahead of American’s 7.3 million. Keep in mind that we fly only in the United States, and have been the leading carrier of domestic passengers since May 2003. However, we beat American’s combined domestic and international passenger figures for the first time in August.
Rounding out the top five for September were Delta, United, and Northwest. Overall, the industry saw a 0.8 percent drop in domestic and international passengers in September to 56.3 million, down from 56.8 million in September 2005, the third consecutive month with a year-over-year decline."
