Delta cutting up to 7,000 jobs

Staff report
Published on: 09/08/04

Delta Air Lines will cut up to 7,000 jobs as part of a new effort to slash costs and regain financial altitude.

The airline also will close its connecting hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Other moves unveiled today include:

— Additional planes for Song, Delta's low-cost unit.

— Growth in flights at Delta's hubs in Atlanta, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.

— Changes in scheduling designed to use airplanes and flight crews more efficiently.

— Plans to revamp the SkyMiles frequent flier program and other service elements such as food and seating. Details of those changes are still being worked out, however.

Delta CEO Gerald Grinstein laid out the recovery moves at a management meeting in Atlanta this morning.

They come as the airline tries to stave off a possible bankruptcy filing after three years of net losses totaling $5.6 billion.

Delta's latest job cuts follow two previous waves of cuts in the past three years.

Delta said those moves trimmed about 16,000 jobs, although the company's total headcount has only fallen about 10,000 since mid-2001 because of hiring at subsidiary regional carriers.

Delta's hub in Dallas, where it is a distant second in market share to hometown giant American Airlines, has been shrinking for years.

Delta has about 4,000 workers at the hub, including a maintenance operation.

Any guess as to how many pilots this includes?
I don't think it will include any pilots actually. The recalls may not continue, but I don't think there will be new furloughs. He said the fleet types will be reduced over 4 years. I would bet as the aircraft go away, there will also be enough guys retiring to equal out those jobs losses. Futher, I am told the new operation will alllow for more block hours on the existing aircraft, and really, the number of block hours is what determines pilot staffing, not the number of aircraft. IF we get the new China routes he mentioned, I would bet we also get a few more 777s.

I wonder how many of 6000-7000 jobs will be cut at Delta, only to be added back at Song? Certainly will happen, just don't know to what extent.

Miles,

There are 4,000 employees in DFW alone. The number of pilots hasn't been negotiated since we still have a No Furlough Clause in effect. I didn't really understand the part about "resolving the EARLY RETIREMENT issues by the end of the month"--since it is known that we will have some more due to the lower GATT rate for OCT vs SEP--which gave us 103 retirements. By threatening Chap 11, that would probably cause more guys to possibly jump ship. Dalpa will have an interesting time with this one.

It actually looks like an increase in mainline flights and a decrease in DCI flights based on the flight restructuring numbers scheduled to go into effect by Jan 31, 05.

Overall, not really anything unexpected but not that bad either.....unless you live and work in Dallas.

What do you guys expect to happen with ASA? The rumor I heard had mother Delta selling off part of ASA to SKW. Sorta makes sense, but I see no reference to it.

This Truly F=ing Sucks A+s

Being a Comair pilot, commuting from DALLAS, this is VERY VERY SCARY.

There will BE ATLEAST 150 NON REVS trying to get to Cincinnati every day.

PROBABLY 500 to ATLANTA!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THE DELTA, ASA, Comair and all of DCI FAMILIES that live and commute from DALLAS OR
WILL AS A RESULT OF THIS B.S. ANNOUNCEMENT.

THIS TRULY F=ING SUCKS A+S.

Jet, I know it sucks, but what part of this is BS? I mean, Delta has to make changes to survive. The DFW hub was not working. Sould they keep it open so you can commute? Commuting is something that we can do in this industry, but it is by no means a promise from the company that you will be able to get to work. If you can't make the commute move. I did.

If you can gain access to the MY ASA web page there is extensive information regarding the expansion of ASA out West including 10 new destinations. The reduction of ASA flights will be offset by the increase out West and the increase in flights out of ATL as part of the overall Delta strategy.

Everybody needs to relax and take a chill pill.

Salt Lake here I come !

I did hear a rumor that Skywest offered DL $700 million for ASA. Just a rumor, though.

PS--RJCAP, what are the ten new destinations out of SLC? I can't see that web site. (I did read Skip's memo about bringing 19 CR7s out there)

Even though this is a major shakeup in the DCI system, I still don't think Skywest will buy anyone. They like their money too much and don't want to deal with merger problems which could cost them BIG time in the long run.

[font=ARIAL,]New SLC flights will include but not limited to:

Austin, TX - 3 connection flights (old route)
Burbank, CA - 3 connection flights (old route)
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - 1 mainline flight (new route)
El Paso, TX - 3 connection flights (old route)
Fayetville, AR - 2 connection flights (new route)
Ft. Lauderdale, FL - 2 mainline flights (new route)
Hayden, CO - 1 mainline flight (old route, brought back)
Little Rock, Ark. - 2 connection flights (new route)
Maui - 1 mainline flight to begin in May '05 (new route)
New Orleans - 2 mainline flights (old route, brought back)
San Antonio - 3 connection flights (old route)
Tampa, Fla. - 2 mainline flights (new route)
Wichita, Kan. - 3 connection flights (new route)

Hey Gen,

Thanks for the support. They pulled the release off the web that had the specific citypairs...I know it was there earlier because I can recall 3...LAX, SAN, STL.
Yes, SLC will be 19 CR7s with 385 pilots/FAs/mechs.

Proline4,

Well, I am sorry if you were one of those ASA guys displaced at DFW---that will be tough on a lot of families. There are also a lot of Delta guys/gals being displaced from DFW as well---and it will be interesting to see where they go. We really don't know where the planes will go---so that will be the next announcement I am sure.....

I fly through Salt Lake quite a bit and it seems like a nice town with friendly people..... There were some big snow storms last year through there, so if you aren't ready to drive in a lot of snow, you may want to move to Mecca.

I also heard from a Salt Lake buddy that your CR7s will take over the B Concourse at SLC airport. I honestly don't know if that is true, but I think that is where Southwest and United have gates...????

I think the recalls will continue. The current plan has a net increase of 54 mailine flights, not including any additional flights out of NYC with the addition of 12 more Song 757s.

To the sceptics

This is from Joe Kolshack's weekly Kool-aid report on Deltanet website.

As you know, we will announce what’s been dubbed the Delta Solution this week, with some details around specific initiatives. In some cases, this will answer many questions and correct many rumors you’ve been hearing, but it’s not going to be the whole story.
But what you hear this week will set the stage for all the changes we have to make as a company to be viable, and position ourselves for profitable growth in the future.

And here is the brief list of new citys for ASA. from its website.

Based on current network plans, the schedule will be reduced as follows:
  • Nov. 1, 2004: 41 flights reduced
  • Dec. 1, 2004: 43 flights reduced
  • Jan. 1, 2005: 13 flights reduced
  • Jan. 31, 2005: All remaining flights (106) reduced
Also as a result of the network restrucure, ASA wil add 10 new destinations to its route map, including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., Reno, Nevada, Richmond, Va., San Diego, San Francisco and Sacramento, Calif., Scranton, Pa. and St. Louis. The new schedule detailing these changes should be loaded into the reservations system by Sept. 18.

General,

From someone who grew up in SLC, yes, it is a nice place. Plenty of outdoor activities, national parks etc. There is snow also, but it is NOT the Fargo ND kind of snow and cold. You can get by very well without 4wd. Unless of course you choose to live up in Park City or Deer Valley. Though with our pay rate that would probably not be feasable. B concourse is used by SWA and UAL. I am not sure how many gates though. A possible reason to use it though is that most of the passenger section of the concourse is ground level. It was redone some years ago when SWA expanded if I am not mistaken. I can tell you this, If I could hold a line on the 70 out there, see-ya ATL!! If you get out there for a few days during the winter, come on up to the Olympic Winter Sports Park, we'll take a few laps on the bobsled track!!!
