There is nobody I love more in the world than the American G.I.
It's all too easy for us all to get wrapped around the axle of our individual problems concerns and routines, without remembering that there are young men and women who choose to serve us, their fellow citizens. These warriors willingly give up certain constitutional rights so that they can protect America. What should leave us all speechless and with a lump in our throats is that if necessary, they are willing to lay down their lives for us. Even more astounding and sad is that in just this recent engagement, over 500 actually have done just that.
So, what can you do to show your support? Just take the time to thank any servicemembers you encounter. I ran into a Marine E-1 in the mall the other day, home on leave after boot camp. Here's a young man who, knowing what's occuring in the world right now, had the cajones to go enlist. I made sure I introduced my 5 and 6 year old to the young man and said thank you. (He was probably more interested in meeting girls than some middle-aged doofus and his kids, but I remember when I was a nineteen year old Airman Basic how nice it felt when I encountered people like that.) VA hospital near where you live? Go visit. Just say thanks. You'll feel uncomfortable for the first few minutes, but you'll be glad you did it. Young man or woman in the terminal or on your aircraft travelling in uniform? Take some time out of your day to look them in the eye, shake their hand, say hello and let them know how very important and special what they're doing is. If they are on your plane, ask the lead to take special care of them on the flight. (Hopefully he/she already is.)
