I drove to Kingman, Arizona today thinking I'd see some of these hundreds of airliners that you hear about parked in the desert, but to my surprise, there weren't very many there. Did see a couple of DL 727's and WN 737's, a few USAirways' 737's, about 7 DHL 727's and 3 TW L1011's, plus a ton of Jetstreams that have been parked there forever. At Las Vegas, just two USAirways' Fokkers and a couple United aircraft, a 737 and DC-10. So where are the airlines hiding there airplanes? Mojave?

Parked planes.......

Fokker,

Not that I am any kind of expert on where these planes get parked, but I have seen a few "mothball motels" from the air and there seems to be one just inside the California border on the southern part of the Mojave desert (Mojave?) and there's another one SE of Phoenix.

I don't think there is one big yard where they are all parked. I've seen a pretty high number at Roswell, NM, Hobbs, NM, all around Tuscon, a ton of 1900s in Albuquerque, but I haven't travelled much outside NM and AZ in the past four months...

You put a few planes at a bunch of places, and you've got a bunch of planes all sitting where the ramp is cheap.

Airplane storage facilities

Here's a few...

The Big 3 are:
Marana AZ- Evergreen Air Center
Victorville CA
Mojave CA

Some of the smaller ones include:
Maxton NC
Smryna TN
Greenwood-Leflore MS
Tuscon AZ (Both Intl and Davis Monthan)

I've been to MZJ, VCV, and MHV to planespot, aka take pictures of the airplanes as a hobby. MZJ has armed guards at their entrance and won't let non-employees in for any reason. I went to VCV and MHV in a 172, though, and it was a great time. Had my friend fly a few wide downwind legs while I got my pictures. Airliners.net has plenty of pictures from these locations...none of mine though, I haven't taken the time to upload them.

VCV is full!

We go into Victorville, CA (VCV) also known as the old George AFB all the time for Touch and Go's. Absolutely sobering to see at least 6 shiny UAL 747's parked and acres upon acres of DAL and UAL 727's. Almost all have been there since 9-11. DAL also has some of the L-1011's there. There are also several cats and dogs of other companies there, but UAL and DAL account for at least 95% of the over 200 large jets sunning in the desert there. Such a waste!

Goodyear near Phoenix is another place with quite a few. Lake City, Florida has some. There is a website called Cactus Wings or something like that with good info on where stuff is parked.

Rowswell NM has a bunch. I've seen NW dc-10, UPS 747 Fine Air DC-8, Emery DC-8s and a multitude of others. And a whole Sh*tload of Conex Turboprops

Marana Airpark just north of Tucson,AZ is accessable to the public by the air. I don't know how they handle visitors flying into MZJ but there is nothing in the facility directory that says it is not open to the public.

Sorry, I should have clarified my initial statement-they wouldn't let us in via car. The airport is a public facility but the storage area is privately owned by Evergreen Air Center. It's easy to take pictures though...just do a few touch-and-gos and have someone else fly.
