TO all Skywest Pilots:

How long do you spend on reserve? How long does it take to hold a line out of ORD? In general are your pilots happy over there?

Thanks,

FF

Word on the street is that some are holding lines at ORD right away...

I've ramped at SKYW for a couple years and everyone seems to be happy,

Great place to be.

(and now for the typical skywest thread hijack.........)

I'm based in COS and we don't have any reserve lines for OCT. Chances are pretty good that you'll hold a line right after IOE in some of the junior bases

viper - for those getting reserve in ORD, any idea how much they're getting used? I have an interview coming up and if hired, I'm wondering what will keep me home more - reserve or line...

Thanks..

Most of the California bases are either not an easy commute, only local trips, only reserve, or super senior.

If awarded a California base out of training, about how long do you think it would take to get somewhere like DEN of SLC on the brasilia?

Everyone I've talked to on reserve is breaking guarantee. You'll probably get more time at home holding a line until we are properly staffed, which doesn't look like it will be anytime soon

Hard to say. Appears to be about 3 months right now for Denver. Right away for Salt Lake. Then again one could get it right out of class.

PLEASE let me do well in my interview with Skywest.

Then, this information will mean something to me more than "That sounds cool..."

AGAIN... pleeeeeease.

I'm all too familar with 0311 as I was one waaaay back when. What MOS is 8531?
Sounds like an air wing range of the list.

I am in PacNW. I think SMF, LAX, SAN, SFO would be fine. A lot of flights going that way. (Yes, I know LAX and SFO are reserve). FAT has some QX flights. I think SBA would be hard to live on F/O salary and hard to commute.

Can someone drop a leg of SBA-SFO-SMF leg and start the work day at SFO for instance?

No, that's not commonly done. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask though. They will let you drop entire days if they have enough reserves available.

Then quit d*c&ing around on the internet..go study your jepp plates and charts, or do some full approaches on MS flight sim. And Good Luck.

8531 is PMI (Primary Marksmanship Instructor). It's only a secondry MOS. Semper Fi.

How are typical reserve schedules in FAT and PSP? With PBS is it still 5 on 2 off or what?

Which place is better to go to as a junior captain?

How long does it take to hear back for an interview after you apply? I have 2500TT and 1300 Multi Turbine.

I'm not quite sure about regular applications, but if you attend a group interview, you will walk away with a full interview date (if you are eligible to hire and not a total loser). I put my application in about a month ago and haven't heard anything until I went the group interview last week.

How firm are they on waiting 6 months to reapply?
Solid. They're pretty strict on their hiring guidelines. But if you know someone on the inside.... who knows...

Thats exactly what I have been doing for 10 hours a day for the past two weeks! However, everyone needs a break now and then...

Thanks!

PDX and easy commute do not belong in the same sentence. PDX is very much an underserved city. Flights are quite full and there are many commuters from several airlines. Commuting to reserve can be pretty frustrating. I'd plan on living in PDX if you're on reserve there. Once you get a line commuting is a little easier. Still you have to look closely at show and release times. If you have an AM trip that releases late you're looking at getting in the night before and going home the morning after. There may be other domicles that offer better commutability. As a general rule MX bases seem to have a lot of lines that start early and finish late so that's something you might want to consider when bidding bases.

PDX is viewed as a desirable area to live. SKYW downsized their PDX domicile forcing many to commute or move. Around the same time DAL closed their PDX domicile since they stopped doing the international flying out of PDX. Many of the DAL crews still live in the area. QX has a decent sized base in PDX. Many F9 pilots seem to live in PDX as well as a good sized contingent from WN. In the summer months commuting from or to PDX can be pretty tough. Even right now loads are pretty high because some carriers reduced service after Labor Day weekend.

Reserve schedules still pretty much stink with PBS. If commuting, I'd go with FAT, since you'll probably hold a line more quickly than PSP.

Now will you walk my stuff in to UPS or what?
;)

We are not commuting (well....he's not....I am) but we are trying to decide between living in FAT or PSP. The problem is that we noticed a bunch of more senior people transferring in to FAT so it actually looks like he will have more people below him in PSP but obviously that can change. So is it 5 on 2 off for reserve?

P.S. I can't even get people I know an interview so I think my name is mud or something.

Can anyone give me a little heads-up on how reserve works. Reserve start times and duration (ie. 12,13,14 hr reserve periods) at my former airline we had 5am and 10am reserve periods, 14 hr reserve period. Thanks

Dave,
I live in SEA area, so in the worse case of not being able to make 30 daily QX flights and 8-9 company flights i can always drive down.. Do you think even with this condition will be harder base to get a line on?

Thanks...

Living in SEA isn't too bad since you can drive. People I know that commute from SEA to PDX seem to drive for the most part. When they fly they will try for one or two flights leaving themselves enough time to drive if the flights don't work out. My neighbor flies for UAL out of SEA and seems to drive the majority of the time. Although you think it would be easy with so many QX flights the problem is it's not uncommon for QX to cancel a flight or two. When that happens the rest of the flights tend to fill up. You have lots of QX and AS commuters so the jumpseat is frequently occupied. The DHC-8 took a weight hit when the Feds folks raised the average pax weight in response to an accident involving a YV aircraft that crashed as a result of crap MX by a subcontractor. But I digress.

I think it would make sense for you to try and get PDX as an FO. No sense moving or commuting long distance as an FO. The advantage of a driving commute is it doesn't matter what time you get off work as long as you can stay awake on the freeway.

What part of SEA do you live? I spend a lot of time up there. We really enjoy SEA. Drop me a PM if you want more info.

12 hour reserve periods, starts as early as 400am...latest start I've seen is 9AM, but i'm sure there are later ones out there........
