Got the interview date now come the questions:
A buddy of mine who's an EMB Capt. tells me that they are mostly hiring into the CRJ.
(1)Are any newhires going into the EMB?
(2)If you get the job, what is the wait for a class date?
(3)Is it true ALPA will be on property in the near future?
(4)What are the likely bases for newhires?

Thanks,

TA

I don't know about #'s 1 or 2.

3. Nobody knows yet. It really depends on who you talk to. SkyWest pilots can petition for representation again in May, I think. Once that happens there will be a great propoganda machine put in motion and fierce debate on both sides of the issue. Then there will be a vote and we'll see.

4. Junior bases seem to be PSP, FAT, but recent hires are being awarded PDX, LAX, SBA, SAN, and DEN before too long. Bid what you want and see what happens. The standing bid system works pretty nice for getting people where they want to be.

Good luck on the interview.

It seem that if a newhire has any jet time at all, even 10 hours, then they get sent to the jet even if they want the Brasilia. I went thru EMB upgrade a few months ago and they were having a tough time filling the RJ classes since they want them to have some jet time. The EMB classes seemed easy to fill.

Texan Aviator- just wondering if you attended any of the career fairs or group interviews to get an interview?

Thanks.

I now a couple people that have interviewed in the past 2 mos that went right to the CRJ. One was a piston pilot for AmFlight the other a 1800 caravan pilot with a couple hundred multi & 700 in the van no jet. The both started fairly fast the amflight guy got a call a couple days after the interveiw and could only give 4 days notice. The caravan guy had about a month I interveiwed the day before the caravan guy have more van time about the same multi but got a class four months out at the time, in the EMB. Noone knows the method. I'm going to fly a jet some where else. (my class for the EMB is July 6th)

Did all of you guys attend a job fair/group interview? I went to one 4 weeks ago and was told my times were competitive and to expect a call in a couple of days to set up an interview . . .and was never called. Just curious if anyone has had a similar experience.

Thanks

I went in at the beginning of Feb. Was told the same thing. Still have heard nothing. A friend told me that they send the invite for further interviewing via email but that it usually ends up in the junk email box. Check that. I am going to give HR a call today just to get some closure.

Flying Illini- thanks for the info. If you wouldn't mind, I'd be curious to hear what HR has to say when you follow up (you can PM if you like). I sent a letter to them as well to follow up.

good luck on the interview guys...

I wouldn't get your hopes up about ALPA just yet, nor would I think it would be a wise thing to bring up in an interview.. Actually, I think it would be f'n hilarious if you interviewed and said you couldnt wait for ALPA to come on property.

Anywho, as far as who gets put in what - its all about where the growth is. right now, there is openings in jet classes because a lot of bro guys arent transitioning when it is available to them. You get put where they need you. There's plenty of guys flying the jet that havent even touched Jet-A before.

New hires in the Jet have seen ORD, DEN, COS, TUS, SLC for the most part.

Good luck on the interviews guys.. It's a good place, regardless of your union beliefs.

To each thier own....

Are you serious? I have about 5. I am half way there. HA! but i decided not to include my turbine time on my resume for fear of them asking me questions about it. like tell me about the pressurization system on the citation and etc.....

Interviewing at SkyWest

I attended a SkyWest job fair a month ago and turned in a resume at the same time. I was able to speak with the people at the HR office and they questioned me about a few things on my resume like the lack of any turbine time and how much actual I had. Nevertheless I recieved a business card and sent emails to the HR office telling them how much I enjoyed my trip, some of my qualifications and that I can be in SLC with a days notice to interview.

After a few more cordial emails I finally recieved a response and a set of dates that I can choose to interview on during April. It would seem exuberance got me in the door. To me SkyWest is the only game in town West of Denver. All other reginals will place you in Atlanta, Indiana, Houston, JFK, and so on. Its all about the east in the regional business which will make any West coaster quite the intrepid commuter.

Don't know about a/c type they are hiring for or when the first class dates will be. First things first, I must do well and get a job, then I can worry about the other stuff.

If ANYONE has any interviewing tips or secret handshakes for the interview it would be much appreciated.

Seems Like There's A Bunch of Us

Welp...it seems like there are quite a few of us interviewing with Skywest in April....just kinda curious what days people are gonna be up there...I'll be there on the 20th...

Yes, make sure when you shake their hand, move your middle finger inward and outward repeatedly. ;)

Know your systems pretty well. Good luck.

Oh yeah, they LOVE that. Try licking your lips and raising an eyebrow while you do it. Follow up with a sassy wink and the job is yours!

Is it possible to go from the left of the bro to the left seat of the rj?

Sure is.
To upgrade, you need 1000 hrs Crew Turbine 121 experience (19 seats or more)
Once in the left seat of the EMB there is a 1 year seat lock.
After your year is up, and if you have seniority and there is a need for CRJ capts, then yes you can "Transition" from left seat in the EMB to the left seat of the CRJ.
In my case, that transition took place after 4 years.

Nope, thanks for the info everyone!

Hey Gents,

Seriously how long, or short, does it take to get into the left seat of the 120? Do you have a probations period or a new hire seat lock? Looking at all of the peeps talking about hiring and interviews seem to have less than 2000 hrs and with all of the jets you are getting, seems as though there could be a gap from senior FOs upgrading and new hires with low time where you might not have enough people to fill the left seat of the CRJ or 120?

Is the 121 crew time the only requirement for upgrade, or is there a total, multi, turbine requirement and maybe so long at the CO.

Seriously curious.

PtP

The total time to upgrade is 2500 total time and 1000 crew time. The only shortage of capable pilots for upgrade was around 2 years ago at the opening of the Houston base. Not many wanted to go there at first so EMB upgrade went down to 6 months. Those pilots were furloughees or had been at other airlines that already the time requirement. I don't ever see upgrade going that low again though. I've flown all four seats: EMB FO, RJ FO, EMB CA, and RJ CA. When I got hired in Sept. of 2000 the EMB upgrades were as low as 14 months and RJ Captain was as low as 3 years. When my turn came around the earliest I could have upgraded to EMB CA was 2 years and 4 months but I did it at 3 years. The earliest I could have transitioned to RJ CA was at 3 years 9 months but I was in my one year seatlock as an EMB CA and didn't transition till 4 years 1 month. Then just a couple of months ago the RJ CA awards went as low as 2 years. It fluctuates but don't count on it always being low. If you want to you can go from EMB FO to EMB CA or RJ FO to RJ CA. There even have been a few who went from EMB FO to RJ CA. The one thing to keep in mind on upgrade is that at SkyWest it's "up or out". If you don't pass your upgrade then you're out of a job.

How long after your 1 year seatlock would it take to upgrade to the left seat of the rj?I know time will change but what is it now?

The up or out policy is three strikes and you are out. that includes writtens/orals/sim checks/aircraft checks. You have to really flail or have a bad attitude with the instructors that we have to bomb upgrade here.
