Actually, we are. The passengers know nothing about us other than what they see when we walk up to the podium and grab the paperwork. Passengers don't want a forest-ranger flying their plane; they want a professional pilot. Like it or not, our uniforms have remained largely unchanged for 70 years, and that's what the passengers want to see.
Maybe 50 years ago..or even in the 70's...but now? Please...airlines are nothing professional. Not one thing about them is. Just check out the UAL complaints (google UAL) Huge article on how crappy they are and how bad they have gotten since Chap11. DAL, AA, CAL..they are all the same. People DO NOT care what pilots wear...all they care about is getting from A to B alive and cheap. Period. A pilot who can do that naked..for $5.00 ..sold! I agree with you that years back when the glam was in the job yes...but today, I got runover in the terminal all the time and I still see it. Pilots really changed the way the public saw them back in 99 when UA pilots brought the airline to a stop to make $400/hr.
