I imagine the theory is that with each passing blade, the engine gets a boosted shot of air. I don't know any particulars, but I'm sure timing is everything with this sort of setup. It DOES work though, at least according to the people who own them, but I can't help but wonder why production airplanes don't use them too. It truly is free.
