I'm guessing I'm comming to ATL in a few months with Delta's deal. Where is a good place to be? I'd have to start out with an apartment until I could sell my DFW house. So lets start there... What is there within an hour from the airport?
And to start out with what are the crash pads like out there? Cuz it looks like I'll be moving there before my wife.

Welcome to my nightmare.....Jump in while the water is warm!!!

Living in ATL

I am one of the rookie in ATL And I have been looking for place to live for past couple of months right now I live in a crash pad since cost of living for first year F/O is quiet out of my budget. I am looking for a roommate to go in on Apartment with me I been looking around have couple of place in mind. M or F dosen't matter. I am an ATR driver pretty much on the bottom of the pile so if any one interested let me know IM me.

Thanx

Well........

What are you looking for? Suburban or urban, or somewhere in between?

If the burbs are what you are after (kids or soon to be) I grew up in Coweta and Fayette Counties (aka: Delta Base Housing) and know quite a bit about them. However, I am a little less informed when it comes to the north side exept that it costs a little more.

Newnan (Coweta County/under the LGC arrival) is a nice place and where I mostly grew up. It happens to be the only place near Atlanta that was not burned during the Civil War because it was a hospital town. And as such, the original town square and most of the houses still exist that were from the early 1800's. The county is growing by leaps and bounds and unfortunately the roads have not. The traffic between Newnan and Peachtree City (more later) is awful, however the ride to the airport is easy depending on what exit you live near. As far as renting is concerned, take a look at the Newnan Lofts. A couple of years ago they renovated an old cotton mill and turned them into apartments. They are pretty darn cheap and lots of square footage plus they give an airline discount of 10%. Their website is www.apartments.com/newnanlofts.

PTC (Peachtree City) is a very unique place in that you can get anywhere in town on a golf cart. It is a planned city that started up in the late fifties and it has continued to grow sense. There are not many more ways to describe it other than that it is newer. There are lots of restaurants and shopping around as well.

Fayetteville is on the other side of PTC from Newnan. It is also an older town but grew up mostly in the seventies and eighties as evidenced by HWY 85. However, just like Newnan and PTC there is an abundancy of new subdivisions as well as restaurants and shopping. Of course there are many more small towns in between these three and a lot of open land for building, unlike Dallas or Houston.

Now for a bit more urban...

If you and your wife are DINKS (dual income, no kids) then I recommend the Virginia Highlands, Midtown, Buckhead, Chastain, or Vinings. The major downside to these areas is price. But, you can't beat them for their locations. Plenty of things to do but traffic can always get burdonsome. On the bright side you can always take MARTA directly to the airport. Also, the condo, loft, townhome market is very good right now. This is what my wife and will be doing next year.

Now, let us hear from some of the folks from the north side on the merits of Marrietta, Smyrna, Gwinnett, and Lawrenceville.

Frats,

I could rent you guys a room at my house. After we all use the computer for Flightinfo.com each day for 6-7 hours, we can then ALL go bike riding (when it isn't raining) and then lift weights together. (No showering together) Then my wife can bake us all a nice PECAN pie! Rent is $1000 a month--each. (max 4 per room)

Bye Bye--General Lee

PS--Seriously, Vinings is nice and is 20 min north of airport on I-285---for apartment renting. Homes are probably cheaper South of the Airport, in Newnan or La Grange. Peachtree City is kinda expensive. I live North.(near Dobbins) Homes are nice in Marrietta and Smyrna. Alpharetta is nice but the drive can $uck in the morning rush hour. Buckhead is expensive---but great for single guys/gals.

Peachtree City is expensive? Nothing compared to Buckhead or Alpharetta. But it is more than the other nearby towns....Newnan, Fayetteville, etc. However, if you have kids, PTC is hard to beat. Newnan is nice. Same with Fayetteville. On the east side, south, Stockbridge is nice.

I hate living in downtown areas, so I don't know much about that, but the suburbs and country areas south of Atlanta are very nice. I live in Senoia which is just next to Peachtree City, about a 30-40 minute drive to Hartsfield. Houses in Senoia are really cheap because it is just starting to get build up like the surrounding areas.

If you've got some more money, you can't beat Peachtree City. I grew up there and I'll probably be buying a house there next year. Golf cart paths go everywhere in the town, the schools are excellent, and crime is pretty much nonexistent. You have to pay a pretty big price for it though. For one of the older houses that are pretty small you'd have to lay down about 200k. All of the new houses are going over 300k. The Delta guys can live in PTC, the rest of us live just outside it. :)

If you do end up moving out here and need to buy a house south of Atlanta, send me a PM. My father's a real estate agent that can find a house for you. Maybe even a discount on the commission. :)

Actually, I live in PTC and my neighbor is an ASA pilot.....and he has a bigger house than I do. Go figure.

I am up in Acworth, N 75 of ATL. The drive can be a pain sometimes if you hit it wrong but as far as the area, not bad at all. Lake Alatoona is 5 min from the house. Schools are pretty good.

Hey thanks all for the info. I am sure there are a BUNCH of us who are wondering the same thing. For a lot of us DFW people the only thing we know of Atlanta is Hapeville! (shivers)

I have never lived on the south side, but it sure seems it is not quite considered a "suburb" of ATL, especially Newnan. Thats country living!! I live on the North side, (Roswell/Alpharetta) and love it. Far away enough from the city, but still "part of the city" if that makes any sense. Best schools in Ga., are east Cobb.

Bottom line, there are a lot of nice places to live in the ATL area. It just depends on what you are looking for. Ask more questions of people who live there. You will need to narrow it down before you start to look, it's a huge area and you could go nuts looking at it all! Good luck to all of you.

Unfortunately you have to drive through that "city" to get to the airport, which can be a huge pain in the @ss if you try it at the wrong time, say, between 6 am and 9 pm.;)

I like the area but the traffic can be extremely frustrating.

Hey General. We're neighbors. Are you at/near the Square. Are you the dumass with the leaf blower at 7 in the morning? I swear I'm going to find that guy if it kills me!!!!!!!

No, I hire a guy to do it at 8 am. I would do it myself, but then I MIGHT miss something on Flightinfo......

Bye Bye--General Leaf(I mean Lee)

There are also a lot of nice areas NE of Atlanta. Lake Lanier is nice but expensive. There is a lot of growth going on in south Hall county on 985 and Barrow county on 85. There are tons of first time buyer type new homes in these areas that are very reasonable. I live up on Lanier and the commute is about 1hr20min if you time it right. Good Luck

Do you remember when they were going to build the "outer perimeter"? That was going to be south of Newnan. It ain't country no more! However, I grew up under the big golf ball.

Did you go to MacIntrash :D? E C H S!, E C H S!, and so fourth.

Seriously though, did you happen to do any flying at FFC? I soloed there in 92 and later I instructed at PTFC in 99.

Frats,
Nope, no MacIntrash for me. I moved to florida right before starting high-school. I did fly at FFC a few times though. I took my first flying lesson there when I was still in junior high. I think the FBO was called Falcon Flight School at the time, before the fancy new terminal and everything was built. I haven't flown there in a long time though. I just moved back here a couple of months ago. I should go down and rent a plane for old times sake. :)
