I'm doing my 300/350 ride @ Simuflight and was wondering if anyone here has done it recently and what was on the oral (other than the usual) and how their type ride went. I have done recurrent there so I know a bit about the place(good chow)! I done a jet type at FS and they wanted every number in the book by memory!? The guy truly seemed shocked that I didn't have a photographic memory!

Thanks!

recommend you study the emergency items and limitations, and have basic understanding of the systems, and what would trip a yellow annunciator.

Be able to do a weight and balance problem and flight planning also.

With that said, it is not an A & P oral.

The checkride prob has a circle to land which is a pain in the sim, but CAN be done, but is tricky.

all of the approaches are very straight forward on the ride and the oral is not too bad. know the electrical system and fuel system real well. they like to ask about crossfeeding when it comes to the fuel system.
on the ride you will more than likely do the VOR 4L circle to 31R (i think these are the right Rwys). they will tell you how to time your turns and what landmarks to look for. you will be looking for white tanks on the ground to help you to know when to turn final. i have been going there for 4 years and i have never had a prob. they are very good about preparing you for the ride. p.m. me if you have any other questions and i will be glad to help answer any you have.
let me know how it goes.

good luck!

I completed the 300/350 initial in August. I agree with satpak77, know your limitations and emergency items. Have a good understanding of the systems and you should be fine on the oral. I took mine with our other Capt and it lasted a little over an hour. Very relaxed if you have a good understanding and study.

The check ride was long but had no "surprises". All the approaches were in JFK and consisted of ILS, VOR and GPS. Several were to a hold with the usual V1 engine failures. I don't recall and "systems" failures on the ride other than the engine failures. I have a cheat for the VOR circle to land if you want to PM me. Also, the single pilot add on is a single engine ILS, coupled if you wish, to a full stop.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Also

Don't expect any silly crap on the checkride, its all straight-forward. Engine failures will happen at like 60 knots or after rotation, not at V1 plus .0001 knots. They are not gonna do that. Also, if you see the low hydraulic annunciator, just plan on a gear failure, assume it. On my type ride I started pumping it down and the examiner said "uh, try to act like I surprised you" with a chuckle. Also, if you are at 12,000 doing steep turns and the examiner fails the door seal, verbally brief the emergency descent but show him you are congizant that you are at 12,000 and may not need a Space Shuttle re-entry to get to 10,000. He will like that. Any NOISES in the sim are door seals which mean look at the press gage, which also means get ready for masks. Other noises are ice on the wings.

CHECK RIDE TIP, if you are in visible moisture, below +5 C, just pop the boots every freaking 2 minutes till your fingers get tired. They like to load you up extra heavy with ice in the sim to drive home the point of icing dangers. Or at least they did with me.

They will NOT fail the GS on the ILS while single engine then say "new minimums kid! what are they? what is the missed? did you brief it? PINK SLIP KID" they will not do that, that is Acme 141 school crap, they will be professional and present real-world scenarios to you. Much of the checkride and training scenarios comes from previous accidents throughout history and is coordination with Simuflight's FAA contacts.

Plan on some yellow light items, just fly the plane and get the checklist out and read the procedure.

Some stuff taught in the schoolhouse does NOT have real-world applications, such as "any light before V-1, we abort". I flew with a guy who had an RVS light come on (simply means the prop levers came off the full prop position .1 millimeter and tripped the flasher, real world, no big deal) and we aborted a gross weight takeoff in Ayacucho, Peru, at 9000 ft field elevation, runway ends at the end of a mountain. Don't know if the abort was "safer" than just rotating and flying. But that is another story for another thread.

Enjoy it, you will have fun

I agree with all the above - by the time your checkride comes it will be a non-event. Use the autopilot...use the autopilot...use the autopilot - especially on the single pilot sign off if you are doing that. You will see the profile at least 3 times before the ride (6 if you count the times as f/o.) Know the memory items and limitations and all will be easy!

Good luck!!

Baja.

Thanks Guys, Some very good info! I do know from past exp that some of the circle to land can be pretty tricky on some sims, you have to start the turn to make the landmarks appear.
