I was wondering how pilots and the company deals with sick days. If you have a flight scheduled in the morning but wake up feeling like crap, do they find another pilot to quickly fill in?

They really have no choice. If you're ill, it's their duty to find a replacement. Most airlines have ready reserve, which are reserve pilots at the airport, in case they need someone quickly.

It depends on the airline and how they pair their lines. Some you fly the whole month with, others could be a 4 day trip only.

Oh to be young and inexperienced again. You haven't lived until you take the "L" to ORD at 4:30am in 2 feet of snow blowing a million mph and sitting ready reserve til lunch then doing 4 rounds to other snow bound paradises. Did I mention making minimum wage and being away from home for a week or two at at time? Don't even mention eating cereal bars scarfed from the FA. I digress...

Subsequent to the sick call, the manager of crew scheduling may or may not call and harrass you, ask for a doctor's note, etc. The likelihood of this phone call is inversely proportional to the current staffing level.

Thanks a bunch. Looks like some of you might have some stories, haha.

One of my all time favorite calls to crew sked.
Made by a friend of mine.
Him : " Can't make it in today.... I've got a bone in my foot."
Scheduling : " Oooh, sounds painful. Give us a call when you're better."

If you are feeling particularly froggy....

Crew Sched: Hello, this is Brad what can I do for you today?

You: Brad, this is Joe Blow, Employee# 000000.

Crew Sched: Yeah Joe, what's up?

You: I need to call out sick for today's pairing due to Anal Glaucouma.

Crew Sched: Anal Glacouma?

You: Yeah, I just can't see my a^% at work today!

Sound of phone being slammed down....
