So, I have a possible op getting a type in a Citation Excel and sitting right seat for 3 years. I don't suppose I'll be flying more than 30 hours a month, probably less.

I've got my CFI, would I do better going and finding some place to teach and building total time, or doing the right seat thing in the citation?

Someday, I'd like to fly corp, but I suppose I have a long way to go.

Anyone have any suggestions or experience?

Would it be possible to do both? Is the schedule such that flying the Citation would preclude instructing, even part time?

Unfortunatly, the citation stuff would be on-call, and it's not fair to students to what I consider to be jerking them around when I disappear for a week.

I don't have it yet, but there is talk with the people I am currently flying for. I'm not going to get excited until they have a plane ticket in hand for DFW, but I am just thinking ahead, in case it happens.

Besides, like I've been reading here, it's not so much what you know as who you know and how lucky you are. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Total (and PIC) time

It would be nice to do both. However, you absolutely do not want to short your students, who would be your bread-and-butter, as well as a source of flight and PIC time.

In your situation, I would go for total (and PIC) time, but with the following caveat: Would, or could, this job lead to a Captain job on the aircraft after you build enough time? Something to consider. Also, do you have to pay for your own Citation type? I make that comment with no intention whatsoever of inciting a discussion on you-know-what, but it's something you should consider in light of the entire situation.

Hope that helps a little. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don't know if it will lead to a captain's job, but if I learn spanish in the next 3 years and the current captain leaves, the possibly. and I don't have to pay for my own training, even if I could afford it, I would spend the money elsewhere ;)

Good deal on the second point.

On the first point, I'm of the opinion that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. In other words, if you're offered a CFI job before this Citation job comes through, you should take it and hold onto it. But if the CItation job is offered first, I would consider it carefully because such offers don't grow on trees (For that matter, in times such as these, neither do CFI jobs.). As long as your CFI is in license, you can always instruct. Moreover, a second language is a good skill for anyone to have.

Once more, hope all this helps, and good luck with whatever you choose.

Think about insurance.

How many months at 30 hours a month will most insurers want to see in terms of expereince? A benchmark is 3,000 TT for a captain slot, WITH some PIC time of some sort, maybe 1 or 2,000 hours.

At 700 hours, you MAY get on as a required crewmwmber, but if you want to see that left seat anytime soon, you will need more time.

If the time is there, then will the plane still be there three years down the road?

I know. I hate questions like this when I have to ask them of myself, but they are worth considering.

One other thing to think about is that with the type you may be able to log some PIC in the airplane.
