They showing a Shuttle HUD type view on the cable news, pretty cool as they approach the top of the clouds.

They used to practice Shuttle approaches in a modified Gulfstream using inflight reverse thrust, and a T-38 with extra-large speedbrakes. One Shuttle astronaut, Joe Engle, had flown the ultimate "training" aircraft, the X-15. Its traffic pattern had a "high key" of 35,000 feet; one 360-degree turn to a lakebed landing.
