What's your opinion? I was wondering if y'all think a potential employer would be interested in knowing about any leadership positions held within a union or committee work such as Safety or Professional Standards.

I say no. It has nothing to do with providing safe transportation from point to point, which is what you're interviewing to do.

The fact that it was a safety commitee helps a little, but I'd still negate the info.

I guess it all depends on who's sitting on the other side of the round table. JMO.

Just my opinion, but I don't think anyone conducting an interview wants to hear anything about the union. Especially the people who separate the incoming resumes into the keep or can files.

Just my 5 cents

Don't disclose it. On the other hand, you may want to review your resume/application. It is spelled VanGUArd, not VanGArd.

I say disclose it. Unions are a fact of life in the aviation industry. While ALPA is a thorn in the side of many companies, unions also do a lot of good for companies too (like making a case to vote for concessions, etc.). Even Negotiators can shed a positive light on themselves during the interview process by talking about win-win scenarios, etc.

By the way, I used to be on an interview board for a large regional, and now I'm at a major. I've disclosed every union job I ever had.

Getting a piloting job is not just about good flying skills. It is about dealing with people and dealing with the company. I think that level headed people involved in ALPA are a good asset to any airline. And remember, at most airlines pilots are the ones hiring you...they like to see people involved (as long as you aren't a hot head).

BEST OF LUCK DUDE!

I would put it on. Bjet driver says it has nothing to do with flying point a to b safely, but a college degree does? To me it shows that you are willing to go beyond being an employee to provide a more safe and productive airline. Of course, I would never be a chief pilot since I believe that all employees are assets instead of liabilities.

As was mentioned previously it depends on who is looking at the resume. I'm not sure it would get you any extra brownie points but it could hurt if some hyper- sensitive office person doesn't like anyone who has a union position. I'd rather not discuss union issues in an interview situation if it can be avoided. Unions are a fact of life at most airlines and there are so many diverse opinions that I consider it risky to intentionally bring it up.

ACA's MEC Chairman got hired by JB last year. I'm sure that came up in the interview.

Didn't seem to hurt him.

If an airline is so rabidly anti-union that voluneering to help make the operation safer is a mark against you, why would you want to work there?
