I wouldn't even get involved if it was for the government, on a sting. Not saying I don't trust their principles, more like I don't trust them to not screw it up and land my a$$ in the slammer somehow. Either that or during the sting, it would come out you were part of the bust and you would be marked by the bad guys for a surprise visit one day months later.

You got that right.

The money might be good, but....

So pilots are being underpaid in this line of work too? $40,000 is lousy pay for the risk taken; at least if the load is of any considerable volume.

I thought the tethered Aerostats would make it risky to fly up close to the ADIZ.

I always figured those to be ridiculously simple for the drug runners to avoid. Just position near the border til Jose, in his car near the Aerostat calls "balloon she is down, come on!" They come down regularily for weather/mx.
OTOH, a lot of criminals are really stupid!

While admittingly not an expert on such things, let's see. A GII crashed with like a zillion pounds on it in Mexico.
The Coast Guard out of here had stopped freighters, go fast boats, and a submarine with another zillion pounds on it,
In Texas, they found a tunnel where a zillion pounds had been moved across the border underground,
At MIA, the find a zillion pounds on commercial flights in everythng from people to flowers.
In the end, about the only thing that I have any confidence in not bringing drugs in is the Space Shuttle.
Wait!!! what is that "moon dust" stuff.

We know when the aerostats are down too :)

The last big domestic case I can recall using private aircraft.

The Puerto Rico and Miami branches are still busy on a daily basis intercepting boats and aircraft in the Caribbean. As are the Coasties and numerous 3 letter Federal Agencies.
