can a guy get on a Mesaba SF3 jumpseat with a full boat in the back? how about a PCL CRJ? any caveats? The route is about an hour long / 250nm.

attention morons: talking about weight / balance issues here, not CASS.
 
My experience with the CRJ has been that as long as you don't have alternate fuel on board, you should be ok. Even then, kid counts can help. Lots of checked bags by the passengers or bootleg bags can hurt as well, but not requiring an alternate seems to make you safe for the most part.
 
If bags are light then may need ballast. AC is nose heavy. Some stations may not have any. Give them as many gate checked items as you can.

There is almost always a way to get on the CRJ jumpseat. It all depends on if the captain is willing to work it the weight/balance issue out with dispatch.
 
For the Saab, make sure the CPT knows your there. The gate agents will leave you and we will block out a couple hundred pounds under wt. Mesaba load planning will never get you on if it is tight, but a captain that does a little extra may.
 
I know at Colgan it almost always comes down to the number of checked bags. (Unless the wx is really nasty). Some of our routes have lots of business folks who travel light. Full airplane, 6 checked bags, 10 carry on bags.

The ol' Saab can be a pain with the weight, but you can get lucky.
