Just ask them. Tell them "N123AB SELCAL AB-CD", and as soon as they respond, your SELCAL should light up and beep. Reply with "SELCAL good".

i would suggest to add "requesting SELCAL check", so you dont get the mutliple questions from ARINC and elimate a little bit of radio traffic.

More important is that you be sure to identify this as a check other wise there is a fee for this service. SELCAL "checks" are free. Just calling is not.

Selcal is a way for Airinc(or other ground stations) to "page" you so you know to call them on the hf radio. If it isn't working you have to monitor the hf frequencies which is annoying and painful since there is usually a lot of static and background noise. It is used for overwater flights and each particular airplane has a four letter code assigned to it.

Example:

Aircraft:" SFO radio, SFO radio, this is cessna 123 on 8 decimal 9, over".
(lots of static and other pilots talking)

ATC:"Cessna 123, SFO radio, go ahead".

Aircraft:"SFO radio, cessna 123 request SELCAL check, AB QM, over"

ATC: now keying up on the four letters, sound of musical chime heard (ABQM).

If your system works properly, you will get the alert on your radio, enabling you to not actively monitor this noisey frequency.

Aircraft: "SFO radio, cessna 123, SELCAL check ok, out"

A Cessna with SELCAL?
