Too lazy to look it up. Does anyone know if there is a reg about having two copies of the same certificate? For instance keeping one with in your flight case for work, and a second copy in your wallet for leisure flying on the side? Also how about a second copy of your medical?

It's not that important, just mild curiosity. Which is why I don't want to take the time to look it up.

I just need to laugh and let you know you've probably spent more time posting this, waiting for a reply, then replying justifing your post and now still waiting than it would have just to open a book and read.

Sometimes you get helpful responses on this board, and sometimes you just get grief.

That's an interesting question. Like Clutch Cargo and futurama08, I have no idea what the answer is. I suspect that it's not legal to have a duplicate certificate, but what do I know?

I have never lost a certificate, so I don't know what sort of statement you might have to sign to promise to return the first if you find it later (like you do with a lost passport), but anyone who has gone through that process might be able to help.

The closest I've come to having a duplicate is having one with a SSAN and one without, but that makes the first invalid.

The back of the Medical Certificate reads "This certificate shall be in the personal possession of the airman at all times while exercising the privileges..." It doesn't say "this certificate or a copy thereof..." I suspect copies are not allowed. Again, anyone who has had experience with a lost Medical Certificate might have better information.

I refuse to look it up, though, just to spite Clutch Cargo and futurama08. :)

Tony, you're assuming (how dare you! LOL) that we don't know. Actually, I do know... it's just that when someone says "I'm too lazy" I figure it really can't be that important to them. Tell me "I looked but couldn't come up with anything" and I have a totally different opinion of you and might just go out of my way to help you. You were an IP, what did you think of a student who told you they were "too lazy?"

Well, there is your answer NEDude. I've never lost one either but I do know that every time you request a new certificate it has a new date of issue on it, thereby invalidating the previous certificate. Likewise, the FAA will not issue more than one copy of the certificate at a time or issue a copy of an expired certificate (such as a CFI ticket).

Ah, good man... just what I'd do! :)

A faxed copy is sufficient for some number of days (don't have the FOM with me right now) in case you lose yours on the road, and our training folks have whatever it takes so they can fax one to us (medical or certificate) if needed. We fax them our medical each year, of course.

As far as a duplicate copy's legality as the original post suggested, I wouldn't know where to begin looking that up... any suggestions?

You must asssume that I am both a really slow typist and that I have been sitting at my computer just anxiously awaiting an answer. Neither are true. This has occupied, including this response, a grand total of about two and a half minutes of my life.
