I'm considering getting my SE ATP just for kicks this summer.

My question is: eventually I'd like to get my SES rating. Would I have to take my SES checkride to ATP standards with app's and everything? Or would it just be a "normal" floatplane checkride?

Also would the SES be added automatically to my ATP or would I get a SES commercial rating?

Thanks.

Depends on what privileges you want in the SES.

If you want private and instrument privileges, then that's what you do.

If you want commercial privileges, then that's what you do.

If you want ATP privileges, then that's what you do.

It would say
Airline Transport Pilot

Airplane Single Engine Land
Airplane Multi Engine Land

Private Pilot
Airplane Single Engine Sea
Instrument Airplan

...I believe.

It would be cool if I already had a SE ATP to add the SES to that.

Since I would have already demonstrated all the app's in a SE airplane, is there any chance I could just add the SES to the ATP without having to do all the app's in the floatplane?

You'd have to check in the PTS to be sure.

You could take the checkride in an amphibious airplane and knock out land and sea in the same ride.

Actually, it wouldn't have the "instrument airplane" part, because technically an ATP certificate counts as an instrument rating.

Fly safe!

Even if he only had private pilot privileges on the SES (and instrument privileges)?

I was under the impression that (as I typed) ATP = no "instrument airplane" but if you had private or commercial privileges somewhere else you'd have "instrument airplane". No?

The SES add-on should require only the water-related PTS items. It should simply add on to your SE ATP, assuming you get that one first.

I agree with most of what has been written above, but my question is: WHY? Why get an ASES ATP at all? What new privileges can be gained? None that I can think of. Plus it would be much harder to find an IFR airplane for that ride or even an examiner qualified to give that ride. Furthermore, you would have a much greater chance of a failure on your record. So why do this?

On the other hand, why not just take the standard Private or Commercial ASES add-on rating check and be like every other sensible person?
