Mirmar..... Close???

wouldn't it be great if there was a military field there that is scheduled to close. oh wait, there is. Miramar. but NIMBYs want a big park. so let's spend 20 billion instead of 1 billion to build a terminal and a parking garage.

What, Mirmar is closing???? Has world peace been declared? Just played golf at Torrey and was amazed at how quiet the jets and helos have become transiting over Torrey, they are doing a good job on the noice mitigation.

maybe not but I suspect it could. the navy left there a while back under BRAC and lo and behold, the USMC moved in. sort of like we "closed" Moffett in the bay area but lo and behold, it is still open some 20 years later as a 'federal airfield.' navy, screwed again. I expect we'll leave North Island next and the Air Force or Marines will move in, or better yet, the local gov't will take it over and it will rot on the vine, much like the Presido. Gov't could have made BILLIONS if they had taken about 1/4 of the Presidio and kept it as a park and sold the rest to developers. instead the whole thing just sort of sits there. non-profits get cheap office space in 1940's era buildings. they spent hundreds of millions to clean up the toxic crap rather than making the developers do it and getting billions.

Brown Field was also a good alternative, but it would only be a matter time before someone put down in TJ International which is a mile or 2 south and looks the same from the air.

Should have kept MCAS El Toro open and given Miramar to the city. Lindberg Field would have been bulldozed and developed into a premier waterfront district in downtown San Diego. With all the land associated with Miramar they could have built a first class airport complex and still kept a non-residential buffer around the airport. Oh well.

Why

Why does SAN need a bigger airport? That's what LAX is for. Build a highspeed train from SAN to LAX perhaps, but why mess with SAN just to have a bigger runway?

yes because the only thing wrong with lindberg is the runway size. those 8 gates in 2000 square feet of that lollipop terminal are just perfect for our customers. one of the worst terminal set ups in the system.

maybe charge by slot, then there will be fewer RJs and 1900s flying in. it is fine for now but san diego isn't getting any smaller and lindberg is about maxed out as it is.

and highspeed trains are great for highspeed train builders and operators. the rest of us pay through the nose for worse service. basically the airlines will end up funding any highspeed trains that are built in this country through our fuel and other taxes.

Brown Field, the only airport I've ever been to with a note on the 10-9 page, "use caution for illegal aliens crossing the runways"
