How long are they? I can't find anything in the AIM or in that Jepp book. :/

Don't care about width - just how long

(i'm talking about those 2 big white boxes 1000ft from the threshhold)

Look in the legend for Jepp charts. 150 feet by 30 feet.

got no jepp charts, but thanks anyhow - The info is enough - Now i'll tell the instructor to look it up if he doesn't believe me

There is an Advisory Circular that defines airport markings and lighting in excruciating detail. I don't have it in front of me, so I couldn't tell you the AC number. Like most ACs, it's available free on request by mail, if you really want to put your instructor away!
