I need some advice and maybe a little help as to what to do with my current situation. About 6 months ago I entered the Army for the WOFT program. I had completed 1 year of college and had just finished my ppl. I really felt at the time that I wanted to fly for the Army and later transfer into the Airforce or Navy. Well I got to Fort Rucker after basic training and realized I had maybe made a mistake with the path I was trying to go down. Deep down I really wanted to stay with fixed wing aircraft and so I had to make a life changing decision. I decided to resign from the WOFT program and pursue an entry-level separation from the Army so that I could go back to college and apply for ROTC. I've tried to get help here at Fort Rucker but nobody really seems to have any answers for my questions. I decided to try my luck with this forum, which has help plenty in the past. First of all does anyone have any experience with separations? The Army is releasing me under chapter 11 (they call it failure to adapt with an uncharacterized discharge less than 180 days served). I'm just wondering will this kind of separation keep me from participating in ROTC? I understand it probably doesn't seem right but I had good intentions. Can this mistake on my part keep me from achieving my goals in life? I made the mistake of jumping into a program that I thought at the time was what I was looking for. Thanks in advance.

What's the JAG say?

As valuable as this forum is, you really need accurate legal advice from a military attorney familiar with separations. You say no one at Rucker can answer your questions? What about the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) office? Not the clerk at the desk but an attorney. Don't leave the building until you get the answers you need. You need to fully understand the implications of what you're accepting backwards and forwards - too late after you sign. Try JAG again.

Just curious, but how did you know that you didn't want to fly helicopters? I'm a fixed wing guy deep down, but I tell you, helicopter flying is a whole new world that I really enjoy. Plus, it makes you a better pilot in my opinion, and the skill makes you that much more marketable when you get out.

Just my opinon, of course. Don't take this as a flame but, I just don't know how you can make that educated decision with very little fixed wing time, and not even going to helicopter flight school.

Then again, you got to go where your heart tells you to.
