I've been out of the Navy for 9 years and have lately been looking into the reserves. The Navy said I failed to promote while in the IRR and lost my commission and can't take me back. Army Guard said I might have a shot if I want to get in as a Warrant Officer. Does any one out there know what the rules are for the Air Force Reserves or Air Guard, or been in the same boat? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

From what I've heard talking to ANG units, if you were passed over twice by the Navy (even in the IRR) you can pretty much forget it. If you were passed over once it's another story, but even then since you've been out longer than 5 years you'll have to go to a full aeronautical rating board. If you can find a unit that's short enough of people they might go through the paperwork nightmare for you.

The way I see it, you've got three strikes against you- passed over, out for 9 years, and the lack of interest in the (drilling)reserves until now. Still, if you're serious about it try calling some of the units on the baseops.net job page and see what they say. You'll never know if you don't try.

Good luck!

As a retired ARNG type, and knowing many Army aviation warrant officers from the Marine Corps and Air Force, the warrant officer option may be your best bet.

I know one, in particular, who was passed over for major while on active duty as a Marine. He now flies in the Reserves out of Ft. Knox. He'll retire at the highest grade held (captain), still flies (Apaches, I think!) and is a Part 121 captain. I know he had a break in service, but I don't know how long it was.

Good Luck!
