Quick question for you knowledgeable contract guys... If I am on reserve one day, and scheduling never calls, does this then become one of my 10 off days??

No, this is not some part 91 outfit:

You: When can I get a day off?
Boss: Well, we didn't call you on Thursday, that was your day off!

Absolutely not. By the same token, if you are on reserve 6 days straight and they don't call any of those 6 days, the 7th day is still a required day off. A day off is only a day off if you are free from any required contact.

Cool fellas, thanks.

And siudude...thats exactly why I asked, that was exactly how my last job worked. A$$es.

I have a question for you?

Why are you not one of those "contract guys" ?

Every single pilot new and old should/must know exactly what is and is not allowed by our crap of a contract.

You can be sure that the company dingdongs will abuse you , and if you dont use it ,you lose it, regardless of if you need it, or want it, you need to enforce it with the dingdong schedulers.

Example: Your notification of a trip only starts when a verbal exchange happens on the phone, NOT when they left the message, meaning your 2 hours to show up. Then you have a 1hr in domocile before departure.

Just remember this -- when you are on reserve you are NOT at rest. So it's not an off day, and if they call you, you still need to make sure that you will have adequate rest (before/after) to legally complete the assignment.

Because this company does a terrible job of teaching the contract. It's not in their best interest anyway. If the new, reserve, probationary pilot doesn't know the contract then the company can impose whatever they want and get away with it. And because he just got through 3 months of fire hose training and probably had to brain dump everything except checkride questions just to make it to IOE.

Good for him for asking the question. I would like to see ALPA do a better job of teaching some of the scheduling items that affect the new pilots the most.

BTW there is a contact person who can answer any questions you have about the contract as it pertains to scheduling. PM me for the number.

You really hit the nail on the head with that one.

I know most of you guys have been here long enough that you probably dont remember, or maybe they did it differently when you came through, but we didnt even really get taught how to bid, when to fill out a credit sheet, and what hardly any of our rights are.

B. Morris came in for about 30 minutes one day, showed us what flica and ourasa was, and then left. So when our entire class had their vacations come in the middle of sim training, we emailed him to ask him what to do about moving it so we didnt lose it.... he simply said "Go to the tutorial on flica and figure it out." Here is it.... almost 4 months later, and none of us have an answer yet when all of our vacations (albeit 2 days) have already passed for the year. Im sure glad I got to enjoy my two days while I was in the sim at 3am!

Im just figuring it out one day at a time, and asking every captain I fly with a number of questions that always get answered with "Didnt they teach you guys this stuff in class?" Short answer: No.

You should have been able to rebid your vacation days. You don't just lose your vacation just because you are in training. Here is the excerpt from the contract.

Training Other Than to Maintain Current Qualification
If a pilot is scheduled for training (for other than to maintain current qualification) that conflicts with his vacation, he shall rebid such vacation from open vacation in his position, unless he and the Company mutually agree that he will take the vacation. If there is no open vacation in his position the pilot may, at his option, 1) postpone the vacation to the next year at which time it shall become non-postponeable vacation (after the vacation has been awarded, a pilot will designate which period(s) will be non-postponeable) or 2) receive vacation pay in lieu of rescheduling or postponing such vacation
