I have AOPA renters insurance right now. I need to renew it in the next few days.

However, I'm going to become a CFI in the next 2-3 months.

What kind of insurance do you recommened?

I believe that ALPA also offers commercial/CFI insurance...a little more expensive, but available. I would also get an umbrella policy from your normal carrier that will cover any lawsuits, etc.

AOPA, AVEMCO and NAFI all have CFI insurance available. For the most part the policies look exactly like the no-owned aircraft (renter) policy you have right now, but with a special endorsement that covers you when acting as a CFI.

Keep in mind that this is insurance for acting as a CFI in someone else's airplane. Teaching in your own airplane is, from an insurance standpoint, a whole different ball game.

So would having one of their basic CFI non-owned policies cover me if I just went and rented from an FBO, not giving dual? Just a private for fun flight.

The AOPA policy did, when I had one about two years back.

Insofar as they're competing for the same business, I believe the AVEMCO and NAFI ones do too.

You gotta check to be sure. Unfortunately, unlike auto insurance, aircraft-related insurance is not heavily regulated and the policies are not standard.

But, as Doozer suggests, the answer is typically yes - the CFI policy includes general renter coverage.

NAFI's insurance offers "errors & omissions", basically negligence protection.

NAFIs' CFI insurers don't quite seem to understand that when a CFI is around an airplane and it gets damaged, it is the CFI's fault. AOPA pays up without needing to get lawyers involved.

Their policy & AOPA's both cover CFIs as renters in non-owned aircraft and borrowers of non-owned.

YAVW.

Thanks. I should probably take out a CFI policy instead of just renewing my non-owned, non-commercial policy...
