Is Horizon the only regional that uses the HUD/HGS? What kind of training is involved in learning how to use it? How many times a year do you end up using it on an approach?

on the CRJ or the Q400?

I bet they'd used it more often than an east coast crew. More fog in SFO, LAX, SEA...

Swa

Now that I think about it, SWA uses HUD's too, right? I seem to remember jumpseating a time or two and the captain was telling me about staying current. I assume there are currency requirements? I haven't been in the cockpit of a SWA plane for a few years, do they still have HGS?

Horizon has it on all types Q200, Q400, and RJ. I'm guessing I use it for a real cat IIIa 600rvr about 10 times a year. Training is minimal, we do a few approaches in the sim once a year to stay current.

It works really well for regular cat 1's and can also get a high mins capt to regular mins once they have completed their initial hud training and required approaches.

Is there ground school training on it, or is it just in the sim.

Technically speaking, there's a ground school component, but it's pretty minimal. Most training is done in the sim. It is used 100% in the sim during upgrade and differences for CAs. On the line, some CAs use it 100% and some only use it when doing a AIII approach.

Compass doesn't have HUDs, but they have the trim that houses them, which essentially means a lot less head room for no apparent reason.:(

So Horizon left the HUD's in the aircraft they sold to CommutAir? Are they going to spend the money on a CatIII program??

Yeah, they left them in. The eventual goal is to become CATIII certified, but that's a while down the road. It's very easy to use. Most people seem to have it figured out by the 2nd or 3rd sim session.

Same for the Mesaba CR9's. Apparantly NWA bought the HUD's but haven't installed them yet (if ever)....
