To: your respective airline: what are your "best guess" upgrade times. asa,cmr,chq,coex,horizion,pinnacle,et al.

I know its very spectlative and changes quicker than Indiana weather but an educated best estimate.

thanks

Comair

For a person hired today based on projected growth and attrition, I'd guess 5 - 8 years.

CHQ around 2.5 years, That may change soon to 1 year depending on the delivery schedules........

Allegheny - infinity and beyond.

Last upgrades were April 2002 thoes guys had fall of 1999 DOH so back then it was 2.5 years.

Mine was 2 years 5 months.

Now its around 5 years to hold Capt in LGA, thoes guys have a spring maybe summer 1998 DOH.

By the time its all said and done maybe 160 guys will be left, making 80 to 90 sen. numbers capts. the DOH of thoes guys will be late 80's (89 or 90).

By Xmas 2004 about 200 on furlough, including me.

Yep Mesaba may be holding a few newhire classes but the word upgrade is not in our opps manual anymore. I have been here over three years and have never been off reserve much less upgrade.

The good part of Reserve is you get paid to sit around on the Internet. I flew 373 hr last year and made $24,850.
24850 devided by 373 = 66.62$ an hr to be an FO on a turboprop.

SO the bad part is I only Avg 31 hr a month. But ya got to love 75hr min pay.

D*mn Othello, I'm right there with ya! 2 1/2 years on reserve in DTW - looks like I might be off reserve though in about 3 or 4 months!

Pinnacle: 2 1/2 years, dropping to 2 years by the Fall, but for someone hired NOW, it'll probably be 4 or 5 years again. Not going to go into why, but think negotiations, management tactics, and last deliveries of jets.

Last time I talked to a buddy of mine, he was still over 100 numbers away at Pinnacle to upgrade. He was hired in June of 2001. What gives?

100 numbers away doesn't mean 100 people from upgrade. Many simply don't have the time or choose not to upgrade, about 1/3 on average, vacancies with about 20 - 30 CA slots come out once a month these days.

That said, if your friend really was hired in June of 2001, he either bypassed the upgrade, didn't have the time, or is on one of the vacancies that will have him in the left seat in either May or June. Upgrades right now are at the 460 seniority number for July effective dates (upgrade class starts the month before the effective date usually).

I am not sure about the regionals, but at Airtran the upgrade is about 2.5 to 3.0 years. When I came we still had the 73's and I upgraded in 1.5 yrs..

Now with the new a/c on order talk around the water cooler is about 2 yrs.

Dash8driver are you with alg and if so I was based in ABE where were you? If alg PM me, maybe we know each other. I left in March 2000, hired in 97.

Mesa upgrade times are as follows:

dash = street hire captains
beech = 2 to 6 months
ERJ = 3 to 3.5 years
CRJ = 3.5 to 4 years

the jet upgrade times are trending downward pretty quick as we add additional aircraft.

the quick upgrade in the dash and the beech are do to training silos that prevent FOs to bid CA in equipment other than their own (except an eventual jet upgrade). The majority of current FOs in the beech and dash are holding out for jet captain spots. (currently 1.5 year seatlock to upgrade in beech or dash)

mesa has hired over 600 pilots in the last six months
september 2003 - 1100+ pilots
march 2004 - 1700+ pilots

Don't forget to add that there were 68 upgrades in yesterdays award. People were slamming on AE for a long time for long upgrade times, and I myself wondered why I was staying here but when the floodgates open the regional airline with the largest fleet has the most opportunities. Something to consider.
