Fellow aviators,

I've got just over 2 years until my military commitment expires. I plan on doing my 737-type/ATP in Dallas during the Summer of 07. Can anyone recommend some good study aides to get me ready for the ATP written, the 737 type-rating course, and civilian/commercial aviation in general? Recommendations for interview-prep?

So far, the vast majority of my experience is flying heavies for the US Air Force. I'm interested in learning the differences between flying for the military and flying in the civilian world. :)

Thanks!

Getting ready to get out

I was in your shoes not too long ago...

I did my type at Higher Power in Dallas...I have all my old pubs from them and they are just collecting dust. If you wanted them I could ship them out to you if you didn't mind covering the bill for shipping. Whoever is doing your type should send all of that to you though.

I highly recommend AlbieF15 of Emerald Coast Consulting for prep. He has a money back guarantee so you've got nothing to lose. You can find him on the majors board.

As for what to study....depends on who you are interviewing for, really. It couldn't hurt to read the parts of FAR/AIM that would apply for who you want to work for. The Air Force doesn't do the best job of teaching us the FARs. I bought some FAR/AIM flash cards at an Air Inc conference that helped me cram for my interviews. For the ATP written and FE written (if you go that route) go to sheppardair.com.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate the offer to ship your pubs to me, but you are correct- the company that is doing my type should send me that stuff.

Do you work for UPS? If so I'd love to ask you some questions about that if you don't mind exchanging a few PMs. :)

For 737 study aids try Cactus Aviation at 737systems.com.

For the ATP try http://www.sheppardair.com/, I studied for 5 days and took the test, only missed 3, two I never saw before and one I just messed up. It costs I believe $75, money back if you don't pass. All the Nvy Corpus Chrsiti guys have used this and none have failed. I did the 737 type at CPT in Houston, $500 cheaper than higher power. I started studying when they sent me the material, about a month prior to class and had no problems. PM me if you have any questions.

If you are still flying and have any interst in any company that has a sim check (fedex, ups), fly everything manual. no flight director, autopilot, etc. do some verticle s's (back to upt) and even do the unthinkable and ask for hold to practice. Basically work on getting your real ifr cross check back. hit the far/aim and then just study the books given by higher power or who ever you are going to. good luck!

No slam on K&S or Higher Power--both have a long and distinugished rep. If money is important, however, Pan Am (the guys who provide my interview prep sims...) have some good deals on types/lodging. I think they've got a whole package deal for about $5000. If you aren't on the GI bill...those couple grand can pay for several suits and other prep stuff...
