Are freighters still exempt from the requirement to have TCAS?

Hi!

It depends.

ALL -121 freighters need TCAS/EGPWS.

I believe all the -135 freighters don't. The -135 PAX aircraft over "X" PAX seats DO need TCAS/EGPWS.

I'm not sure how the -125 freighters fit into the mix.

Not sure how much it costs per plane to install, but a few trips acros the North Atlantic below 290 will burn more than enough extra gas to negate any cost savings by not installing it.

No longer exempt

If all else fails get out the book(internet) and look it up.:erm: I looked up 121.356 and found that large(>33,000#) freighters operated under Part 121 were required to have TCAS II as of 1 January 2005. Large piston-engined freighters were required to have TCAS I as of that date as were all pax or combi freighters with 10-30 seats.

I assume Part 125 and 129 freighters are the same but will verify.

Is this due to RVSM?? Cause that starts at FL280, and TCAS isn't a requirement for RVSM.

Our airplanes fly the NAT all the time with the TCAS mel'd.

Oops, you're right. Fell asleep at the wheel on that one. Was thinking of something else.
Our TCAS seems to be the one thing that DOESN'T break.
