This has been bugging me for some time. As far as ratings are concerned is it simply PPL, instrument, ME, Comm? Or PPL, Comm, instument, ME,....?

I don't think that's the case at all, but I don't know of all the actual ratings or certs involved. For example, you take your Comm check in a single engine aircraft, do you get an additional rating of Comm ME, even if you were a PPL AMEL? Also, the instrument rating, say you get it as a PP in a single, would you need to get a cert for when you become a Comm pilot, as well as a Comm ME pilot?

Make sense? Thanks for any help folks! :)

I'll try to tackle this one...

Private, Commercial, CFI and (I believe) Airline Transport are all Certificates

Instrument, Airplane Single or Multiengine Land, Airplane Single or Multiengine Sea, Glider, Helicopter, Airship, etc. are all Ratings (?)

(For those of you with more experience - How am I doing so far?)

If you take your CPL checkride in a single (complex) you would be

Commercial Pilot
Airplane Single Engine Land

Private Pilot
Airplane Multiengine Land

If you took the instrument checkride in the single right after your private single and before your private multiengine, you would be:

Commercial Pilot
Airplane Single Engine Land

Private Pilot
Airplane Multiengine Land

Instrument Airplane

So you'd have instrument privilages in both (provided you did the instrument work on the ME check ride) and commercial privilages in the single (CFI, banner towing, jumpers, etc.) but only private privilages in the twin (no job with an airline)...

I think so anyway...it's been a while since I reviewed all of this stuff and my brain is still stuck on the whole "is it legal to..." stuff regarding having a commercial pilot certificate and flying the family around if they rent the plane...and of course learning all the numbers for the RG is fun too....

But anyway...this sounds right in my mind...hopefully it is...if not, I'm sure someone will spank me with a leather whip and make me ask for another while barking like a dog.....

er....I'm sure someone will correct me...
