Ok, I have a question. What kind of security is this where they make you get a "ramp pass" to get out on the ramp. To get the ramp pass all you need is the tail number of an aircraft on the ramp. I have neer been asked for any ID, lisence or anything. Plus the "ramp pass" is printed up on those crappy business card sheets from Office Depot. So why bother? If anybody thinks this is actually going to hinder anything they are nuts. I've seen better security on a highschool locker. I'm not talking about BFE airports either. IAD and LAS...But for the most part it's the same stuff everywhere else I've gone.

I got one last week at LAS. It was kinda stupid. He did ask for my id but if I didnt have a card he was not going to let me out on the ramp. The best part is that I walked from the ramp to the door to get my passengers and was standing right next to the security guy. He saw me enter and I never walked passed him. He then asked me for my card again. I looked at him asked him if he was serious. He had just let me in 1 minute earlier and I never went passed him when I came in.

I felt so much more secure knowing this guy was checking my card twice within a minute.

It's called a "Dog and Pony Show".......

They do it so that when reporters come by working on a story about poor general aviation security, they can point to the ramp passes/"security guards" to prove that they are secure so the reporter doesn't get as good a scare value out of his story and the public feels that much safer.

It's all about perception. People would rather feel like they're doing something than spend the money (or use common sense) to put up some real security.

Apt description of what you are seeing at larger metro airports.

High visibility FBO = High visibility security smokescreen.

Ramp security is not the issue here.

Save your breath protesting the idiocy.
