If you want a fast upgrade, don't go corporate. You will get upgrade based on seniority at a regional, not necessarily so at a corporate operator....plus, with your time, you'd have a hard time finding a GOOD corporate job.
I tend to disagree. I could have gone either route, but chose the corporate route, and got typed after 6 months, in a Westwind.
At most regionals, you are looking at a MINIMUM of 2 years to upgrade. 2 years at a low end carrier at that. At the better carriers, it's probably more like 5 + years to upgrade.
But, on the other hand, corporate is all about who you know. If you don't know anyone with a corporation, you're chances are much more slim. At the regionals, they will interview you now without anyone walking your stuff in.
Corporate could go either way as to how soon one upgrades. Some do it on need, some on seniority, some...well...maybe never. A number of operations have a minimum time (in type or with company) written in their manuals. Many operators I know, you'll upgrade in less than two years. However, here are a few that I know of that differ (I'll not be giving specific names however).
One very large department in the southeast, minimum 5 years in the turbo-prop. They don't specify seat, just that is how long you'll be in that aircraft before moving up to an FO position in the jet. Another midwest operator, minimum 5 years AS FO on turbo-prop. 15 years to FO on jet. This operator has virtually no turnover in the pilot ranks. Another Fortune 500 company has a minumum total time. Based on need they'll type you but no promises.
IMHO, a good company will upgrade in less than two years. Especially in jet equipment, the cost difference between an SIC initial and PIC initial isn't that great and it's identical training less a type ride for the SIC.
Regionals rock. When I was hired at Eagle, they said I'd be a Captain in 18 months and I'd FLOW THROUGH to American Airlines and rub elbows with the best pilots in the WORLD. And get them coffee. Kewl, huh?
