Hey all,

I'm not an aviator, but I spend entire flights listening to the radio traffic on United's flights. I love it. Two quick questions that I'm hoping you can help me out with:

1) In relation to Boston Logan...what is "RIPIT"? I'm guessing it is a navigational fix or landmark of a sort...does it stand ford anything?

2) Is there any way to listen to more radio traffic when I'm not on the plane? Ideally some web-stream, but I'm guessing that may be a bit optomistic.

Thanks!
Dave

It's been a while since I've flown into BOS so I don't remember exactly where RIPIT is, but you are correct that it is a navigational fix. I would guess that it might have something to do with baseball but I can't be sure. There's a fix called BOSOX near Boston as well as one called WITCH near Salem so they do get creative with naming some fixes.

One of the funniest I've come across is on an approach to Portsmouth NH. The fixes in order on the approach are ITAWT, ITAWA, PUDYE, TTATT, IDEED. (The spelling might be off a bit but I trust you get the idea)

Edit: RIPIT is a fix 5 miles out on final approach to runway 27. You've probably heard something like "Airliner XXX, 5 miles from RIPIT, maintain 3000 until established, cleared ILS runway 27". The controller is just giving the flight it's position in relation to a fix on the approach along with a clearance to execute the approach.

As stated, probably a fix name. A website for streaming ATC is www.liveatc.net. Has a variety of airports....

Recently the powers that be have named alot of new or redesigned arrivals into major cities after the local sports teams. Some of the arrivals into Phoenix are named the SUNNS, DBACK and CYOTE arrivals.

Naturally, there is a navigation fix near Denver called ELWAY...

You might be too young for this song but Ive heard "Ripit, Ripit real good..." Heard some guy call it inbound that way. It was great!

You must fly into beantown.

You'll usually hear, "united 69 maintain 170kts to Ripit contact the tower there."

Throw in a bunch of moca's and you have landed in boston.

Enjoy beantown and our beer. :)

Not that young that I don't know the tune to "Whip it" when I hear it ;)

Thanks for all the info, guys. As crazy as it may sound, even just listening to the radio makes me want to get my pilot's license sometime in the future.

RIPIT is a point approximately 5 miles from the approach end of Rwy 27 in Boston (pretty sure it's 27). Controllers designate a point X number of miles from the runway which coincides with an instrument approach. As mentioned above, its a point that controllers often want pilots to maintain a certain speed so as to keep the flow of arrivals moving at the required pace for the given weather conditions.
