McGuire Interview
First off I think you will be pleasantly surprised that the atmosphere will be alot more laid back then you expect. You'll probably be hanging around the ops room for a while and that will give you a good opportunity to introduce yourself to some of the pilots, as they'll probably be the ones interviewing you. Most units I've heard including my experiences will have the chief pilot and another 1 or 2 high ranking officers, and then a couple random pilots, whoever happens to be around at the time, to formally interview you. Obviously the first question will probably be "tell us about yourself." Here's your chance. "Tell us about a time you had to overcome adversity" is another popular one. One thing I did that they seemed to like was I brought my packet, and made 7-8 photo copies of it bound with a paper clip to give out to everyone in the room so as they were asking me questions they could flip through and check out my scores, resume, transcripts, etc. Also bring your log book just in case they want to see it. They're gonna ask you why the Kc-10, so have a good reason. Be honest with them or they'll see right through you. They want to see #1 is he good enough to get though UPT and fly the thing, but most importantly are they gonna want to be stuck with you on a trip. For some reason alot of people are hesitant admitting when asked:" what do you want out of life" and "where do you see yourself in 20 years" that they want to fly for an airline. What do you think 90% of heavy drivers do on the civilian side. I don't think I met one person at Dover that didn't fly for an airline, that's the answer they expect. I just let them know that I wasn't using the Air Force simply as a road to the airlines. As for your suit, just look good. Don't worry about what color it is as long as its not neon. The other guys interviewing with me had black and blue. I opted for the pimpest suit I have, a tan piece with a blue shirt and yellow tie. Almost every single person I met that day remarked to me how much they liked it and the chief pilot must have said it 2 -3 times. Point is just look sharp and be yourself, if your not a plain blue suit guy than find something that's more you. Research the 78th and 76th ARS as much as you can. Find out every little thing about whichever one you're meeting so you can throw it out in the interview and impress them that you did a little research before you came to meet them. Lastly I would just say be enthusiastic and confident. And Good luck. I was gonna go see the 78th and 76th next month myself just for the experience but cancelled and decided to save my money and give the invite to someone else. Let us know how it goes. Any more ques feel free to ask.
