here's a question i have. if someone owns say a gulfstream can they fly it single pilot? are there any rules for flying your own plane privately? this would be strictly part 91 flying, nothing for hire at all. thanks

Depends on the certification of the airplane. Gulfstream? I've never flown one, but I'll guess not. A small Citation? Problably. The insurance company might have a problem as well.

FAR 91 has no restrictions about having a multi-pilot crew.

So to answer your question? Maybe.

If you are asking about someone who owns a share of a NetJets plane being able to fly it solo, the answer is no. Any owner who actually wishes to fly the plane is required to attend type training as well as aircraft and company recurrent. And when that person does fly, an IOE or other instructor pilot is required to be in the cockpit.

I'm sure you'll find that ALL Gulfsteams are certified as crewed aircraft (2 pilots). You will need at least 1 type rated pilot and a warm body holding a pilots lic of some sort.

Your insurance company will no doubt have the final word on the crew.

The rule is that if an aircraft has jet propulsion or weighs over 12,500 lbs then it requires two pilots. Now, before people go nuts, there are waivers to almost every "rule" and one of the more public waivers pertain to the jet part of the above rule. There have been quite a few jet aircraft recently certified as "single pilot jets". This means that they can be flown single pilot.

Gulfstreams and Boeings and all the rest do not have this single pilot certification so they must be crewed by two pilots, one of whom must have a type rating for that aircraft. Even if you have an ATP, go to Savanna and plunk down $60mil for you own Gulfstream you can not fly it home by yourself.

Hope it helps.

From a safety and liability stand point: Why would anyone want too?
